A tiny bit of procrastination (which, btw, I've already written 1K today, so I think I'm good...)

Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions.

[livejournal.com profile] gabolange gave me Bones, Stargate: SG-1, and Slings & Arrows.

Cut! )

I think this might be the first time I've done one of these memes for a show I absolutely hate. Fun times!
grav_ity: (SPARKY!!!)
Last night, I started re-reading [livejournal.com profile] melyanna's semi-epic Season 8/Season 1 SG-1/Stargate Atlantis crossover THE CROSSROADS OF ESHU, wherein Sam gets transported to an Alternate Universe where Elizabeth is still in charge of the SGC and...well, much awesomeness transpires. This wasn't the first AU I ever read, but it's a really good one. Lots of consideration went into picking the divergence point, and then structuring the world and the reasons for it. And then the ending is just excellent. :)

Plus, THERE IS A SHINY TRAILER, which will always have a special place in my heart, because that is how I met [livejournal.com profile] faith_king:

(Jack and John have a conversation in an elevator that NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED. I love it.)

(Also, [livejournal.com profile] melyanna has both a Mitchell AND a Caldwell in this story...neither of whom had been introduced to the audience when she wrote it.)

Anyway, I'm now in full out Atlantis-mode. I gave some thought to re-reading [livejournal.com profile] stargate_ren, so I read up to the Solstice story, and then scrolled down the page to see how many more were left and, WOW, THERE WERE A LOT. But I guess it's been half a decade. ;)

FANDOM, I LOVE YOU. That's basically what it comes down to. As usual. :)

ZOMG, 2010!

OH, THIS EPISODE!

SO MANY MEMORIES!

I really, really adore this show. Just sayin'.

I realized that I never actually posted the rec for that Game of Thrones vid I talked about when I explained why I sat down and watched the show over the weekend. So here's the rec. The song is "Thistle And Weeds" which I had never heard, by Mumford and Sons, which I'd only heard of because of the Lion song. Anyway, the first 20 seconds of the vid was enough to make me watch the show. It's really that good. The vid focuses primarily on Dany and her various relationships. It pulls no punches. Literally. But the song encompasses Dany's determination and the path she takes to find her power, which was something I adored in the series itself. I also really, really liked the editing (which I won't spoil for you), and the song is a wonderful kind of understatedly epic that makes me wonder why no one ever pointed me at Mumford and Son's before.

Thistle and Weeds: Fire cannot kill the dragon.

++

In a COMPLETELY different direction, we have the ADORABLE PONDS from Eleventy!Who, in a vid called "You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate", which pretty much tells you everything you need to know. The song and clip choices complement one another perfectly, and the tone of the vid is spot on with the series itself.

You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate: Oh, Ponds.

++

I should probably have mentioned that all of these are from Vividcon, which I did not attend but looked forward to because I knew there would be great vids afterward. This next vid was the "intro", and it might just be the day I'm having, but I totally cried. FANDOM, you guys! AND VIDDING! *hugs everyone*

Intro Vid 2011: Welcome all

++

This next vid covers a whopping SEVENTEEN YEARS (some of which overlap, but still) of footage. All Stargate, all the time (and it says something about the Ancients that I agree with...I think!).

High Voltage

++

There is not enough "How To Train Your Dragon" out there. Just sayin'.

Notes: My longest podfic so far, this was challenging for a couple reasons. One, it's a FREAKING FANTASTIC STORY, and a lot of that is because of the formatting, which doesn't always translate to voice. Two, I had real trouble making it through the 1969 and 1986 sections without crying. At least I didn't have any problems separating Sam from Helen. ;)

Enjoy!

Hello!

I totally meant to do this yesterday, but had I done so, I would have been missing a fic, so I suppose it's all for the best.

The Affair of the Asphyxiated Acafan, by AJHall, Sherlock I'm not even finished this one yet, but you all need to go and read it right away. Because SARAH IS AWESOME, and that just doesn't happen often enough. Also, the case is magnificent, and the author's management of the characters borders on stupendous.

ETA: Having now finished the fic, just...go. Go now. Books and fandom and casework and continuity and AMAZING USE OF THE FEMALE CHARACTERS and...*brain explodes*

The Story Needed Mending, by [livejournal.com profile] mad_maudlin, Sanctuary JUST AMAZING. Fairy Tales and Awesome Kate and Awesome Ashley and JUST AWESOME (with hints of femslash). This is one of those fics where you think it's going one way, and then it does, but at the same time it doesn't, and it's even better for it.

Mariposa Grove (A Caelo Usque Ad Centrum), by [livejournal.com profile] bessemerprocess, Sanctuary. I think, had I woken up on Christmas morning to discover that this was my Yuletide Gift, I might have had an actual coronary. The Five are a mess, but it's a beautiful mess and it's a mess that they chose, and the structure and style of this story just BLOWS MY MIND. (Don't forget to check out the missing scenes when you're done.)

No Valentines, by [livejournal.com profile] penknife, Stargate SG-1 (Sam/Jack). Adorable doesn't even BEGIN to cover it.

There was something else, I'm sure of it. I may be back later.

+++

This isn't it, but have a Star Trek fanvid, set to my New Favourite Song "What About Everything" by Carbon Leaf. ;)

As requested by [livejournal.com profile] cnidarian.  You can find the fic itself at this link.

Boy does this take me back. Thank goodness I'm going through something of a fandom renaissance lately. :)

Some background! I wrote three "big" stories while I was in the SG-1 fandom, two of them simultaneously (more or less). While I was writing those longer stories, I wrote about a dozen shorter ones off of unrelated plot bunnies, most of which were designed to deepen my understanding of the characters. If this is starting to sound familiar, it's because I decided that it worked well with SG-1, so I am doing it again with Sanctuary.  In any case, this story in particular was written to fill in some gaps while I was off writing "Blood Night", particularly the very last scene of that fic, but also to practice taking Sam and Jack (and Teal'c) out of the main action, and letting Daniel and Janet work through it themselves.

Other interesting things: I think this might have been my first (attempt at a) sex scene (which I say because it kind of, uh, failed). Also, it was the first time I cheated with italics, but in this case it was actually to make the story shorter. Finally, this is one of the only fics I've ever written (or read, if I'm being honest), where SG-1 ran away. Which, frankly, they probably should have done more often. But that would have been a boring show. And then since they don't usually run away, it makes it kind of worse when they do.

I have not yet begun to commentate )

Short but sweet, I hope! ;)  If you would like to request one of your own, I am still taking prompts here.

You may not know it, f-list, but today is Ascension Day. I, for one, like to celebrate this day a less than traditional fashion.

The tradition began a few years ago when [livejournal.com profile] mylittleredgirl wrote a fanfic about buying "Glad you're back from the dead!" cards for Daniel Jackson (I should say that I was sure it was her, but I've been looking all day and I can't find it, so I am starting to doubt myself). I commented on the fic, but neither of us can remember where it was. Anyway, the end result was that Red found and mailed me an Ascension Day card, and even though I don't remember exactly what she wrote in it, I do remember having quite a time explaining it to my parents. :P

I am going to make some fic recs now, that have to do with Ascension in its various forms. Please comment below with recs of your own. Self-promotion is strongly encouraged. You can post 'shippy stories, gen stories, crack, angst, fluff...anything, so long as it centres around Ascension. This year, I am also throwing the floor open to any SGA fics that deal with Ascension.

The Rec List

**After Great Pain is a four part series I wrote with [livejournal.com profile] pellucid back in 2004. It centres on Janet's reaction to Daniel's Ascension, and what happened when he got back. It starts off in an unhappy place, but we were both addicted to happy endings at the time.

Mourning
Grief
Reconciliation
Healing

**The Trial is something I wrote while I was writing "After Great Pain". It's sort of my explanation as to why Daniel chose to tell act the way he did at the end of Season Six. It's the story where I realized what I felt about the Ancients, and I haven't really ever deviated from that original conclusion.

**I had some trouble with Daniel when he got back from the other plane. He was still Daniel...but he wasn't quite the Daniel I'd fallen in love with. When I read the initial spoilers for "Threads", I remember being quite put out. I think I'd just seen "Abyss" for the first time, and Jack's reaction to Ascension really stuck with me. I was pretty sure that if he was given the choice between Ascension and death, Daniel would choose death. Since this was before I discovered meta, I wrote Moon Shadow instead. (And yes, it's based on the Cat Stevens song. I was going through a phase.)

**Then of course I watched "Threads" and realized that it hadn't taken quite the path I'd thought about when I first read the spoilers. When the "Loose Ends" ficathon came along, [livejournal.com profile] audreys_castle requested something about Daniel finding out about Jacob, and I wrote Resurrection as a response.

**[livejournal.com profile] aurora_novarum, whose attention to detail brought us the masterful "Haunted Ship", wrote a post-Threads fic that had me at the title: Interference. Because you can never have too much Bra'tac.

**I haven't read any of [livejournal.com profile] night_spear1287's "Daniel of Abydos" series (so much fanfic, SO LITTLE TIME!), but I've been assured by people I trust that it's awesome, and the final part, Journeys, deals with Ascension. The series is on my "summer list" for sure!

**[livejournal.com profile] pellucid wrote Humpty Dumpty Had A Great Fall for me for the 2006 [livejournal.com profile] danjanficathon which, even though by the time she wrote it I'd forgotten when I requested, was still totally what I wanted. (RATED M!)

**And what's a rec post without a Five Things! Here we have [livejournal.com profile] vain_glorious's Five Experiences Daniel Had While Descending. I think it's the one about the languages that really gets me where it counts.

**Last but not least, we have [livejournal.com profile] tripoli8's Mnemophobia, another story I haven't read but have been told I will adore (if only because I agree with her!). I am excited that in doing this, I've found stories to read!

Important Note!

Since I've been in this fandom for, gosh, SIX YEARS NOW, I have forgotten a lot. On the list of stories I've forgotten (besides the one about the greeting card I mentioned in the intro), we have, at the very least, The One Where Janet Has Daniel's Glasses ([livejournal.com profile] meg_tdj? Is that yours?), and I am sure there are many others (um...[livejournal.com profile] pellucid, didn't you have one that takes place after Abyss? Do you have an ff.net page?). If I have forgotten you, I am sorry. THAT'S WHAT THE COMMENTS ARE FOR!

SO! Now it's your turn. Comment with your own recs, make your own posts and link back to this one, whatever tickles your fancy!

(Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sg_fignewton for filling in the blanks for me when it came to fic!)
