Jekyll

I saw the cold open for Jekyll in the summer of 2010, and for some reason I don't remember, never got any further (even though I thought it was very good). I was in Jordan at the time, which probably explains it, because that was when my portable hard drive died, and so I couldn't get files from anyone.

ANYWAY!

THE HOBBIT happened, and I was reminded that James Nesbitt (Bofur) had been in Jekyll, and I thought about maybe watching it. [livejournal.com profile] tessagratton assured me that it was excellent, and even though Moffat and I don't exactly have the best relationship with television, I gave it a go.

At six episodes (and a definite Ending), Jekyll is a pretty easy show to get through. In addition to Nesbitt, there's Gina Bellman (who is AMAZING), and a wonderful collection of Who actors, including Lady Christina, the scientist from "The Cold Earth" and Agatha Christie.

It's more of a sequel than an adaptation, which I appreciate, and it suffers none of the self-love that Sherlock seems to wallow in (also it is much less problematic in terms of female characters, though honesty compels me to tell you that it is also much less pretty), and while it is fairly convoluted and complicated, it doesn't have outright time travel, so it doesn't get ahead of itself like Who does, on occasion.

Nesbitt does a fabulous job. I was concerned for a bit in the second episode that I was going to have a panic attack (much like when scary!Methos appeared in Highlander and nearly turned me off of James in Sanctuary), but Tessa talked me off the edge and I kept on, and it turned out to be exactly the kind of thing I like, in that it directly ADDRESSED the idea of consent and identity, instead of playing them for laughs (looking at you, Fringe). It is, as she said, a story about love, and really there's nothing I like more than that.

Everything else I want to gush about it basically a spoiler at this point, so let me just say that the relationships were all brilliantly put together. It was very neat to see the ideas that will show up later in both Sherlock and Who. I won two separate bets with myself while watching, though since I've seen Moffat's other stuff, I'm not sure it was entirely fair. Needless to say, the complaints I usually have about Moffat's work are entirely not here, and even though it wasn't exactly sunshine and puppies, it was very, very good.

Oh, and the puns. The ridiculously predictable jokes and THE PUNS. It was amazing.

I have no idea how I am going to tag this...

Today on the blog, I talk about why I love season finales.

(There's a bit of flailing, I know you're all surprised, but no real spoilers.)

Meme!

A tiny bit of procrastination (which, btw, I've already written 1K today, so I think I'm good...)

Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions.

[livejournal.com profile] gabolange gave me Bones, Stargate: SG-1, and Slings & Arrows.

Cut! )

I think this might be the first time I've done one of these memes for a show I absolutely hate. Fun times!

It's summer time...which means it's time once again for the Tubeys. Every year, they leave me flailing between inarticulate rage (WHY can I not vote for Sue Sylvester as my LEAST favourite character? WHAT is the point when we all know that Supernatural is going to win everything anyway (the boys winning "best"s and the girls winnings "worst"s, of course)?), and inarticulate flailing (HOW can I choose between Jack and Ianto, and Desmond and Penny? OR Olivia/Peter, Amy/Eleven, Hardison/Parker and Kate/Castle???)

And we haven't even got to Best Performance by an Inanimate Object yet. The year the Impala, the sonic screw driver and John Sheppard's hair were all nominated destroyed me, and I've never quite recovered.

So, f-list, perhaps you can solve a few of fandom's most un-debated problems.

1. Captain Jack Sparrow or Captain Jack Harkness?

2. Which of "Lost" and "24" had the most impact on how TV is made and how stories are told?

3. WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE SUE SYLVESTER?

4. How come people can't properly define the word "villain"?

5. On what planet is Penelope Garcia a side kick?

1. SAINTS WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!!!!

(Oooooh, and Brees' son has ear protection! *hearts*)

2. Volkswagon, Hyundai and McDonald's are my favourite commercials. Bud loses big time, and I will happily go back to forgetting GoDaddy exists.

3. Sleeping time!

The other alternative was paying attention to "Rise of the Silver Surfer" while it was on TV last night.

(Hee, totally called Stan Lee's cameo!)

1. Ask and I'll assign you the basis of some show idea.
2. Create the characters you need, including the actors who'd play them. Photos optional but recommended.
3. Come up with a general synopsis of the premise.

[livejournal.com profile] havocthecat requested a superhero TV show. I've always been a Marvel girl, but I hope there will be crossover with [livejournal.com profile] aj's Gotham. :)

This was hard for me, because I really love superhero stories and I've read a lot of them and, you know, some of them are really, really clever (really, everyone should go and read "Rising Stars". It's probably the greatest thing I've ever read. I cried like a baby even though I was on a very crowded train. It was awesome).

And...here we are!

Donor is the story of what happens to Chelsie Garrity as she scours the globe looking for the heart donor who saved her life when she was thirteen. It's also the story of Victor Goran, whose daughter was not so lucky when she was waiting for an operation. Wealthy, ruthless and more than a little obsessed with medical miracles, Goran tracks Chel across the globe, hoping that when she finds her donor, she'll lead him to more. Chel, in searching for her Donor, finds a whole pile of other people with extraordinary powers and sends back semi-coded messages to her friend Laura about them, all while dodging Alex, whom Goran has tasked with apprehending her.

(There's mostly a rotating cast in this, with only the four main principles from week to week.)

I may or may not have done this specifically so that [livejournal.com profile] irony_rocks can ship Uhura and Lawrence Dominic. :)

After watching "A Very Supernatural Christmas", I had this half baked plan to watch other Christmas specials on the grounds that I am not at home and I want to be.

I thought of Buffy's "Amends" and the Veronica Mars Christmas ep from season one (which has the bonus of being one of my favourite episodes of the show) and...drew a blank. I just watched "In Excelsis Deo" (TWW) a few weeks ago and I can't remember the name of the other one...with Josh and the therapy, maybe? I have trouble getting WW eps, but I might get lucky.

Anyway, anyone have suggestions?
