Hello, f-list!

I just wanted to let you know that if you (or, um, any of your children who happen to attend a local university...) are in Toronto this weekend, and have some free time, I am having a book launch for PRAIRIE FIRE.

Time: 3PM
Place: Bakka Phoenix Bookstore, which is on Harboard Street, near Spadina
Plans: There will be a reading and then I'll sign the books (for sale at the store). Also, there will be cookies.

(The Rachel Formerly Known As Cupcake Rachel is making the cookies. She no longer makes cupcakes, hence the change in her name. But, ye gods, these cookies.)

ANYWAY, I would love to see you, if you are able to come (or send envoys).

++

For those of you who can't make it, the book is available to order (and presumably in store? I have no idea, but you can check after March 1), in both the US and Canada.
US: Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million, Amazon
Canada: Chapters, Bakka Phoenix, Amazon

Overseas is still limited to online, but if you look on BOOK DEPOSITORY they are usually pretty good, and don't charge for shipping.

And, as always, if you have time to review it (Goodreads, Amazon, whatever bookstore you went with, etc), that is amazing.

So!

A while ago there was a dreamwidth user who was doing summaries of the Silmarillion, except she wanted it to be low key, so the request was made not to share the summaries publicly.

I respect this TREMENDOUSLY, and I understand that people are busy and no one wants 10,000 emails a week asking for an update because THAT SHOULDN'T BE HOW FANDOM WORKS.

*ahem*

Anyway, long story short, this was a friend-of-a-friend deal, and I did such a good job at keeping the secret that I forget 1. The posters name, and 2. Which one of you it was that told me in the first place.

On my poor, mostly-deceased Sherlock, this was fine, because I just typed "Silm" into the address bar, and the computer remembered, but now I have a NEW laptop, and so I have totally lost the link.

So if you are the person who told me, or know what the heck I am talking about, will you PLEASE TELL ME AGAIN? I'm screening the comments.

Thank you!

(And, dammit Apple, you assured me the data transfer would work! AND THEN IT DIDN'T WORK.)

ETA: Thank you, internet.

It is once again Chinese New Year, which I commemorate by thinking about the time [livejournal.com profile] beccatoria and I escaped from South Korea.

It's actually a pretty good story...

Does anyone have a link to the interview that this .gif set is from?

Glamdring! I said Glamdring!

I'm asking for a friend.

(I am not, in fact, asking for a friend.)

Edit: Found it!

Okay, so they aren't MY thoughts, they're [livejournal.com profile] azarsuerte's, but they are AMAZING and I wish I HAD THOUGHT OF THEM and while the cynical part of me is all "man, they really have trained you to take what you're given", I'm trying to ignore it because cynicism is for...well, it's not for me.

Anyway, thoughts about Natasha Romanov, and how her portrayal shifted between IR2 and The Avengers.

(Sidenote: it is really hard for me to type "IR" as the short form for Ironman, a bit because IR is my short form for [livejournal.com profile] irony_rocks, but mostly because that's not iron's chemical shorthand.)

But seriously, read that post.

My Dearest F-list,

Once upon a time, during a job interview for a job I don’t remember, someone asked me the question “What are your goals in the next five years?”. I’ll be honest: usually when I get that question I make things up. I have no IDEA what I want from life, or rather, I know what I want, but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t sound all that great to an interviewer. That day, though, I looked the interviewer in the eye, and I said “I would like to have a book published before I turn 30”, and as soon as I said the words, I knew I meant them.

My goals have changed a bit since then. I know now that making publication goals isn’t a good idea, because you have so little control over that. It’s better to set writing goals, and find friends to help you hold yourself accountable to them. I’m not saying that to make an excuse for why I won’t have a book published before I’m thirty. I’m saying that because it will help me stay sane in the long run.

The facts are these. I have written three complete manuscripts. I have queried two of them. And at some point in 2014, probably after my thirtieth birthday, one of those manuscripts will be printed and covered and bound, and available on a shelf in a bookstore near you.

When I say I couldn’t have done it without you, I mean it from the bottom of my heart. You have picked me up, cheered me on, edited my drafts, reviewed my fanfiction, guided my story telling abilities, and, perhaps most importantly, you have made me laugh. I am a better person, and certainly a better writer, for having known every one of you, and you have my eternal love and thanks.

I have no idea what’s next. It’s a long wait, and I know that there will be tough times and good ones aplenty. I’m glad I get to share this good news with you, as I have shared my bad news, and I look forward to more conversation, more squeeing, and hopefully meeting a few more of you in person.

All my love,
Kate

P.S. I cracked up SO HARD when [livejournal.com profile] ancarett told me that my pictures from earlier in the week would make great author photots, because that's EXACTLY WHY I ASKED THE SISTER TO TAKE THEM, and I couldn't actually TELL you all. This has been the longest month EVER. :)

So way back in the LotR heyday, Ain't It Cool News did a contest where you had to build a Balrog out of marshmallows, light it on fire and take a picture. The original post (ie. the first hit when you google "marshmallow balrog") does not have the photos anymore (just the text). Does anyone know where I might find them?
grav_ity: (sanctuary)
You guys.

One year ago today, to stave off the loneliness of my Christmas in Alberta, I started watching season one of a little show some of you may be familiar with called "Sanctuary". It's fair to say that, since then, my life has changed.

More than any other fannish thing I have done, Sanctuary has shaped me as a person. It's widened my circle of friends. It's made me a better writer. It's made me think about issues I never would have considered, and in doing so has made me a better person.

I wanted to say thank you. For adding me to your f-list. For reading my stuff and saying constructive things about it. For not un-friending me when I posted nine times about "Normandy". For helping me through this year, which saw great change and growth.

And, because it can never be said too often, I LOVE HELEN MAGNUS. She's scary and awesome, and I'm glad she's on TV. Find a little Helen Magnus in yourselves, my friends, whether it's a pair of boots with heels or the resolve to stand up for what you believe in. Make choices. Embrace them, even when they are bad. Find your way out of the Underworld by choosing to live.

And, seriously, there STILL hasn't been any "spring time in Vienna" fic. I'm just saying. ;)
grav_ity: (sanctuary)
In the Sanctuary episode "Awakening", is it "Castor" or "Caster"? IMDb says one and the wiki says the other, and my episode doesn't have the closing credits..but it dawns on me that some of you have the DVDs now, so if one of you could check and let me know, that would be awesome.
grav_ity: (distract him with opera!)
[livejournal.com profile] cnidarian camped by a volcano. Apparently there were evacuation signs. She didn't take a picture of them, but she did provide me with a link.

Then, because she knows I appreciate the finer things in life, she sent me this ).

Um...I had something else. I've forgotten what it was. EMMA WILL BE ON THE GROUND SOON!

Oh, and my current research will probably make writing Steampunk easier someday. If "Weather Eye" turns out to be steampunk (it wants to be post-Steampunk, and I'm not even sure how that works, though it might actually make my research more useful, and WOW, am I ever not allowed to think about this before November...)
grav_ity: (fangirls)
There is a new comm called [livejournal.com profile] helpthesouth, in the same vein as the other charity comms.

My offer post is here. I am offering at least 1K of Sanctuary fic, but am also open to suggestion if you have ideas based on what I've already written.

Query

Does anyone have links that will work in Canada for last night's Daily Show and Colbert Report? I assume they were amazing, and I really need other people's politics right now.

ETA: Thanks guys. I feel a bit better now. (And, seriously, Jon Stewart! Funny, honest, and even though he might have been a bit more vindictive than I am comfortable with (admittedly, with as good a reason as anyone), he still managed to end on such an overwhelmingly positive note that I can't really complain.)

Poem Post

It's still poetry month, right? I always lose track of these things.

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight post this and I'm posting it here too because...well, because it's beautiful.

To my friend who is a woman and a poet, like me

You called me a poet
and took me in your arms, laughing
with the terror of it. So close—
And I, shut down, dreaming of a stranger
shedding his sealskin while the moon rose
over an empty beach—I did not see you,
though I looked into the black pits
of your eyes, and held you
breasts against breasts, your image
mine, and I, the same as you.

You called me a poet.
You—the poet—
So now I will believe you
I will take your gift and make words of it;
Perhaps I am falling
into another love, that expects nothing.
You kissed me—you—
but no man ever said I was a poet.

I wish you a lover, gentle as the waves on the beach
that is perhaps less empty when we are not there.
I wish you the invisible dance
on the shores of consciousness,
slipping back to the sea at daylight.
I wish you poetry
and lust, kisses deep and salt as the sea,
words that pierce like morning,
love poured down, running over the sand into water.
And because you say I am a poet,
I wish myself the same.

[Margaret Elphinstone]

Mostly the last verse, I think. *hearts her f-list*

Last night I had my first [livejournal.com profile] sfa_ficawards nightmare. [livejournal.com profile] tielan had filled out her nominations incorrectly, and I had to delete them because even though I knew what she meant, I couldn't cut her a break just because she was my friend. It was awful! :D

What I'm saying, f-list, is that nominations are open at the comm, and I've made them as straightforward as possible (which probably means they make sense to me and no one else, but whatever!). So go forth and nominate! Right now, it's just five stories per nominator, until I get an idea of how big it's going to get, but we might throw it open next week.

Please feel free to tell everyone you know. Particularly if you're [livejournal.com profile] lanna_kitty :)

The more the merrier!

Hello F-list!

I am wondering if one of you would like to beta my Sanctuary/H.G. Wells fic. There are spoilers for season two of Warehouse 13, but if you don't watch the show, you shouldn't be too out of the loop. Mostly, I need someone to make sure that a) it makes sense and b) I haven't typed "Helen" when I meant to type "Helena", and vice versa. The fic is about 10K. It will be done shortly, and I am hoping to start posting on Wednesday.

Comments are screened, so you can leave your email address, or if you already have my email address, just drop me a line.

Thanks!

Good morning f-list!

This is a fly-by post to let you know that someone, somewhere* is running a [livejournal.com profile] girlsavesboyfic ficathon. It's multi-fandom, and follows all the usual requirements, plus the one indicated by the comm's name. It looks like you can pretty much pick your fandom, and write whatever you want. Sign-ups are open until September 1st.

*okay, so it's [livejournal.com profile] misscam and she's in Norway. :p
