grav_ity: (distract him with opera!)
I did a bit of a f-list trim. Basically, if you haven't posted lately or if I couldn't remember who you were, you were trimmed. This is done in the hope that soon I will have a full time job and a limited amount of time to spend on the internet.

NOTES:

1. Most [livejournal.com profile] chaos_thon people got cut. This is because I unlocked "Donor", which means that now it's accessible to everyone.

2. If you are a Criminal Minds fan, I kept you on the grounds that we haven't had that much time to get to know one another.

3. It is possible that I made mistakes and deleted people by accident. After a while, all ticky boxes start to look the same. If you feel you were deleted by accident, please let me know and I'll add you back.

*bites nails.*

THANK YOU [info]colej55 !

You are so fantastic to me!

First order of business: find sufficiently "happy" icon.  Because now that Voldemort is the feature of my "Glee" icon, it takes away from the joy a little bit. :)  I think I'd like something in an Amelia Pond...but I am open to suggestion.

Hi f-list!

So my mother went to Ikea this morning without sending me the cake recipes I need for the weekend. I know where the chocolate one is well enough to give directions to my dad ("Mary Moore Cookbook, page with the most cocoa"; "218, getting kinda messy. GOOD LORD, how can you read this?"), but I have NO IDEA where the white cake one is!

SO!

If any of you have a trusted vanilla, white cake, yellow cake, etc. recipe you wouldn't mind sharing, I'd be grateful! If it could have a fahrenheit oven temperature and measure things in cups and teaspoons, that would be preferred.

THANK YOU!

Thank goodness lj kept my cake icon! ;)

I seem to recall there being a way to back up your livejournal, except I forget what it is. Is there something, or am I making it up?

ALSO!

THANK YOU for the the chocolates, anonymous person! *noms*

Fan Music

There's a thought I've been having for a few days now. It started after the "Mash Up" episode of Glee where we didn't actually get a mash up of a) I Could Have Danced All Night/The Thong Song or b) Sweet Caroline/Bust A Move. And I want them.

We have fanfiction and we have fanvids and we have fanart...WHY don't we have fanmusic?

And I wouldn't just limit it to playing with music from Glee.

I would include here every song you wanted on a soundtrack that wasn't there. For example, on the Chronicles of Narnia soundtrack, the ONLY character with their own theme is the White Witch). Why don't brilliant people write me a song called "King Edmund the Just" that incorporates the existing "canon" elements within the published soundtrack, but introduces a theme that is entirely about Edmund?

I realize that this would be incredibly difficult. I know that scoring a piece of music would be infinitely harder and more complex than fiction, art or vidding, but...I still think it's a REALLY GOOD IDEA. And I can't possibly be the first person who has thought of it!

So...is there such a thing as fan music? And where do I find it if there is?

ETA: Apparently there is something called "filk" which is not entirely what I meant, but is probably close enough.

So, flist, you are (mostly) liberal, bleeding heart females. You've exploded over Stargate Universe (rightfully so), and you complained about the finale of Battlestar Galactica for reasons that I don't entirely understand or agree with, but can come to terms with.

You have not said anything about Caster Semenya, and I am wondering what you think.

Background: Caster Semenya is an 800 metre runner from South Africa, who has blasted away a bunch of records and is currently undergoing a gender test to see if she is, in fact, eligible to complete as a woman.

More Background: At the Melbourne Olympics, Tamara Press won the shot put and discus, and was later suspected of not being female. Her gender could not be determined, but testing became mandatory in 1966 and Tamara never competed again. The testing is only for females, and nowadays typically involves evaluation by gynecologists, endocrinologists, psychologists, and internal medicine specialists. (Source) There are also new rules that allow people who have had reassignment surgery to compete as the gender they identify. The IOC discontinued the testing process in 1999 (currently it's being brought up again by the IAAF).

So, flist, how do you feel?

This is for my aunt and my grandmother...and for everyone else I know who is on the "someday" list. Your area has an organization. Help them if you can.

I have 126 flisters. According to statistics, the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about 1 in 8. Source. To put that in perspective, that means, assuming all female, there are 16 individuals on my flist that will be affected by breast cancer. How absolutely insane is that? (Note: some of my flisters are male and at least two of them are Knitted, but being affected is being affected)

Have you screened yourself lately? Early detection of breast cancer saves lives. Start your Early Detection Plan today.

→ Every woman should do a self breast exam once a month, about a week after her period ends. Here's information on How to Preform a breast self-exam. About 15% of tumors are felt but cannot be seen by regular mammographic screening.
→ Between the ages of 20 and 39, every woman should have a clinical breast exam every 3 years.
→ After age 40, every woman should have a clinical breast exam done each year.

The earlier that a breast cancer is detected, the more likely it is that treatment can be curable. Mammograms, clinical breast exams, and breast self-exams are key. Regular screening mammograms can decrease the mortality of breast cancer by 30%.
