silly question... what is so different about this LJ clone, if anything? Or do people just want one?

I am not really the most qualified person to answer this (pellucid has been making a lot of posts with links and such if you want to click around for a while), but basically my understanding is this: Dreamwidth is made by people who jumped ship when LJ was sold to SUP, and they are hoping to avoid things like ads forever, as well as being more...open? Or something? As I said, fuzzy on the details. :)
