I don't watch Game of Thrones anymore. For reasons we've discussed. But I can't deny that I'm kind enjoying this season's marketing campaign, particularly every reference to the promised "wild wedding".

(aside: The Red Wedding, or rather, my reading about it on wiki, was the exact moment when I threw my hands in the air, and gave up. And not even for that reason. Or that one. OR EVEN THAT ONE. But the one where Arya misses her dog by half a second in the woods. I'M VERY BITTER ABOUT THAT.)

Anyway, the trailers always make me think that I want to watch it, and I have to remind myself that I don't, and this trailer does an excellent job:

"Mawwidge is what bwings us togever, today."

(Everything is better with The Princess Bride, obviously.)

Something that has bothered me about the book series, and bothers me more with every book, is how Martin sets up these coincidences so that characters JUST MISS meeting each other and thus things get even more verfuckt then they would have otherwise. It happens over and over and OVER again. I get that he's trying to subvert the trope of fantasy characters managing to coincidentally meet and thus save the day, but at this point it's annoying.

At some point, you have to decide which way you are going to stretch credulity, and while I will not always pick the happy way (I said, once upon a time, that I would, but I don't anymore), I will pick the happy way most of the time.

I sort of resent having the dragons called monsters, since I'm rooting for Daenerys. But that was pretty funny. I am so looking forward to season 3! I loved A Storm of Swords, but I may be amongst a small group in that respect, maybe? Not sure. I've never been in the SoFaI fandom.

Most of the fans I know like this book. Except for that one thing. You know, THAT one.

That marriage-related thing? (Honestly, it's been so long since I read SoS...)

Well, that and the bit with the direwolf and the sewing kit that happens afterwards (which, btw, I maintain was totally part of the pitch when HBO first agreed to make the show. Like, someone was all "I don't know..." and someone else was all "In Season Three we get to sew a guy's [spoiler] onto his [spoiler]!" and then the whole thing got the green light).

Knowing HBO, I would not be surprised in the least.

You know I thought I would like TV!Robb more than I liked Book!Robb because, I don't know, I just did? But it didn't turn out that way. And somehow I like TV!Cat less.

Every book has THAT one. The THAT just changes. I think it's a comment on how much I love the series that I didn't stop reading after the THAT at the end of book one. ;)

I am interested in hearing about why you don't watch it anymore. Because I'm probably going to watch S3, just like I'm probably going to buy the next book if Martin ever gets off his ass and finishes it (I figure the chances are pretty good he's going to pull a Jordan on us), even though I'm not really enjoying it anymore. Actually I don't know if I ever enjoyed it, per se.

I like hope. And bad guys dying in timely fashions. And good guys not dying, as much as possible.

So, yeah. Not really for me.

(And that's before you get to all the squicky stuff.)

Ah yes. GoT and its attendant books are NOT of the hopeful/romantic/feel-good variety, in any way, shape or form.

Ah ha ha ha hahaa haha haha. Hah.

I can't believe that's one of the OFFICIAL trailers.

Ha ha ha hahahahhaa.

I read all the books except the last one. And when I found out it's just the same timeline but with other characters who get just as fucked up as the ones in the last book, I just decided eh. I'll get to it later.

A year later...

I've only read book 1 so far, and haven't watched the show at all, but that was still enough for me to watch the trailer. Because, you know, Princess Bride. And that was still enough for me to crack up when the kid was asking why the grandfather had read him the book because the evil prince "wins", because he pretty much summed up my feelings about the book right there. (I do plan to at least read books 2 and 3, because I inherited them for free, but I'm so on the fence right now about whether I just don't like them. I feel like a failure as a fantasy geek.)

Dude, I am also a fantasy geek and I refuse to a) read on obligation and b) feel bad about not liking the books.

Come to the Teen section, darling. There's cookies.

(And also kissing. But mostly cookies.)
