Remember the time Rick Riordan wrote a middle grade series with an ON THE PAGE gender fluid character?
BECAUSE THAT IS A THING THAT HAPPENED. Rick Riordan has come here to chew gum and leverage his power in the publishing world, and he is all out of gum!
There is talk of pronouns, there is talk of identity, there is "I am not here to educate you", there is SO MUCH FREAKING GOODNESS IN THIS BOOK FOR TEN YEAR OLDS.
(There's also: a Muslim character who wears a hijab, a Deaf elf who communicates via ASL, discussion of homelessness and privilege, and SO MUCH MORE.)
(I'm not positive, but it's possible that the gender fluid character is being set up as The Love Interest, which is also SUPER COOL.)
Also, the adventure is great, the world building is much more cohesive than in Book #1 (I think it took a while for Riordan to hit stride, but he's definitely hit it!), and I really enjoyed it.
