So.
Usually I really like the Persephone myth. Like, I mean, the real one, where Persephone is all "No, really, I will be your Queen and the most terrifying/honoured person in Greek Mythology, because growing up is necessary and I don't want to be a demigoddess in my mother's shadow forever." and then Hades is awesome to her for the rest of eternity.
I'm on the fence about this one, though, mostly because at the end, Keturah gives a HUGE speech about how walking in the shadow of Death made her realize how awesome life was, and how tricking him made her realize she was powerful, and how spending more time with her village made her realize how much she loved all the people in it, and then she chooses to die, because she loves Death so much (because he's basically stalked her since she was born and basically groomed her to love him, so, let's be real: I was never going to be here for this relationship).
My own personal feelings on the ending aside, this book is excellent. The setting is brilliant, and Keturah herself is a wonderful character. She has supportive friendships and her relationship with her grandmother is complicated, but ultimately loving. Also, I liked John a lot.
People have been telling me to read this book since 2009 or so, and I finally bought it and read it, and it was worth the hype/wait.
