This is a collection of short stories set in Meyer's CINDER-verse (i.e. futuristic sci-fi fairy-tale retellings), and usually I don't buy these things, but there were five unpublished stories in this book (the other four had been "extra content" for pre-orders and the like), and I had read none of them (because: Canada), and I really love this series, so I bought it. Also, I was at Target with Emma, and it was 20% off.
ANYWAY, I regret nothing. The stories are arranged in chronological order, which I appreciate, and follow Cinder's time line from just before her arrival at Michelle Benoit's farm, to the [redacted for spoilers] that takes place two years after WINTER ends. Essentially, you get one story for each character's childhood (though Winter and Jacin are put together for obvious reasons), bringing extra heartbreak to everyone (though I think Kai's is the most hopeful, but it also overlaps with CINDER directly, so). Then the final story is just TOO ADORABLE AND HAPPY FOR WORDS.
There's one story in the middle, "The Little Android", which is a straight up Little Mermaid retelling and doesn't involve any of the main characters at all. It just highlights how excellent Meyer's world-building is, really, and how much thought she's given to how the fair-tales fit into it.
If you liked the series, I recommend this as a nice cap on the whole thing. I don't know if I'll be following Meyer into HEARTLESS (I didn't read FAIREST, and I have a very low villain tolerance), but the CINDER books were amazing, and this was an excellent coda.
