So this was kind of horrifying?
I mean it was definitely supposed to be scary. It's a Caribbean folktale-inspired book for 10-year-olds, and it kept me up at night. :)
I liked it a lot. I read it during a cold snap, in a cottage covered with snow, and I still felt like tropical monsters were going to descend upon me at any moment. That's a gift, man.
I love how Middle Grade books can do this style of horror that kids love and grown-ups find terrifying. SPLENDOUR AND GLOOM was like that, and by all accounts THE NIGHT GARDENER is too. I'm happy to make more seats at the table to include stories that just European in origin.
