When Plot Bunnies Attack
Aug. 11th, 2013 06:09 pmSo...
Is there a Pacific Rim Big Bang yet?
And does anyone have a link to a good timeline of kaiju attacks, beginning with San Fran, but specifically including the Vancouver attack?
Asking for a friend*.

Date: 2013-08-11 10:38 pm (UTC)I'm kinda surprised - Pacific Rim is hitting me the same way The Hobbit did. I love it and I will spend hours reading fic, but I don't seem to need to write fic. No clues why.

OH WAIT. No, really, you might actually be the ONE PERSON on my flist who likes both Pacific Rim and the fandom I'm fusing it with! Um, until

...because really RArmitage is one of the few things that might have made that movie better for me lol.
ETA: And wow I'm pathetic. I lasted a whopping week and a half without my icon package, and have now given in and renewed only because I needed my Armitage one. That's kinda ridiculous. And I'm not sure I care lol.

Date: 2013-08-11 10:49 pm (UTC)Margaret's father used to be an engineer working on the Wall of Life, but has become increasingly disillusioned with the project, and decided to move the family from the relatively safe Okanagan Valley (interior British Columbia), to the much more exposed to kaiju attacks Prince Rupert, where one John Thornton oversees the one of the last remaining Canadian Jaeger production facilities.
Margaret is kind of pissed because:
1. The Okanagan is very nice. Prince Rupert is really not.
2. After her brother's experience as a Jaeger pilot ended badly, forcing him into exile, she is not a huge fan of the Jaeger program, even though at one time she was in training to be a pilot, so that she and her brother could work together.
Anyway, Prince Rupert is basically split between people who work on the Wall, which is dangerous but they feed you, and people who work for Thornton, which is safer, but also has a definite end date.
Strikes, kaiju blue (which will be what kills Bessy Higgins), something about accidental Drift...I am working on the details. Raleigh and Mako will both show up, but probably not meet each other.
Oh, and kissing. Goddamnit.
Thoughts?
ETA: Rupert, not George. SHEESH. Also, I'm thinking "Sea to Sky" for the title, but only because "The Heart of the Monster" is so completely ridiculous. ;)

Date: 2013-08-14 12:10 am (UTC)Also, especially love that you are mentioning the little Kaiju blue problem.. I haven't really seen it mentioned much in fic world other than as something random manual labory for Raleigh to do. There not enough actual real world consequences going on.

Did you know Stacker Pentacost's YOUNGER SISTER Luna died in the first kaiju attack? And that's what inspired him to become a Jaeger pilot? I CANNOT WITH THIS I JUST CANNOT.
I can't do a Big Bang but I have at least one fic idea already. *flails*

Date: 2013-08-12 02:37 am (UTC)I probably won't do a big bang either, but if there was one handy I might try for it. I kind of want art. :) But I think I can do my own promo on tumblr, and I was poking at art tonight, and it might be okay if I just do it myself.
Thanks for the timeline!

Date: 2013-08-13 12:03 pm (UTC)(Of course I know about it. I seem to have OD'd on Pacific Rim the last three weeks. To the detriment of all my Avengers fic. Lesigh.)
And yes, I have a bunny (I'm still not sure how it ends) and there's a snobbish part of me that's saying "well, back in my day, we had big bangs that were 40K and not a word less!"

Date: 2013-08-13 10:03 pm (UTC)I can't do this bigbang because while it accepts cross overs, the main characters have to be canon to PacRim, and mine are skewed more towards the other fandom.
AH, WELL.

Date: 2013-08-13 11:50 pm (UTC)The downside of a summer blockbuster. :(
On the other hand, PacRim has spawned a BAJILLION AU fusion Driftfics. Ah, Drift-compatibility; your instalove shortcut!

Date: 2013-08-13 11:59 pm (UTC)DriftBang, now there's an idea. XD
Mind you, the downside of a DriftBang is that my OTPs probably wouldn't be Drift-compatible, usually because at least one of the pairing is emotionally scarred and emotionally wary and unwilling to open up.
And, because I'm philosophically opposed to "proof of true love in the form of [insert test here]". I don't want the shortcut to the ending - I want the journey! I want to see how these people work out being human and wanting to be close and having to overcome themselves to be close!
(Which is probably why I'm writing The Naming Of Foxes, in a kind of meta-protest to all the "Drift compatibility = insta-love" stories - which I don't mind when I can get swept away, but which feel a little like cheating to me.)

Date: 2013-08-14 12:01 am (UTC)Like, they Drift the first time by accident, and it's a world of DO NOT WANT for her, because she has all these preconceived notions about the Drift (it kind of ruined her brother). He, on the other hand, already liked her quite a bit, and when he ran into her DO NOT WANT, decided to step back a bit. Then: confusions, misunderstandings, ETC. Fun times. But no instalove. :)
ETA: ALSO! I was trying to think of something awful that could happen to her brother, and I was all "Hmmm...this thing is pretty awful!" and then I randomly refreshed tumblr and found out that the awful thing I'd thought of HAPPENED TO HERC HANSEN, because OF COURSE IT DID.
Kaiju battleplan: take over earth. ruin Herc Hansen's entire life.

Date: 2013-08-14 12:11 am (UTC)Even if his on-screen accent makes me cringe.
I'm writing some Australian characters into The Naming Of Foxes - friends of Herc's who worked in the Sydney Shatterdome (she's a neuropsych, he's a LOCCENT tech, they were going to transfer to HK but events moved too fast), and they're providing Herc - and Mako and Raleigh - with an emotional framework in the wake of the war and the 'what happens now' question.

Date: 2013-08-14 12:14 am (UTC)I like the sound of your characters!

Date: 2013-08-14 12:27 am (UTC)Both the accents were eargrating, but one comes to expect that of 'Australian' characters in big budget films.
Then again, the placement of the anti-Kaiju Wall in Sydney and the Kaiju attack was a case of Did Not Do The Research too. Sydney is a harbour - a port, well in from the coastline. The Kaiju would have had to travel at least 10km inland from the mouth of Port Jackson (the inlet that heads to the Hbr Bridge/Opera House), avoiding all the houses and landmass between it and the harbour.
It is pretty much the stupidest place to build a wall if you're trying to protect Sydney from the kaiju.
I know, setting shots and everything, but *grr* nevertheless...

Date: 2013-08-14 12:30 am (UTC)The weird thing is that there are SO MANY AUSSIE ACTORS, though!
BUT THE WALL, yes. I had thoughts about that. And if it's explained in the novel/the art book, I haven't got there yet. There's a bit where Vancouver gets attacked too, and I was all "...but that's not what Vancouver LOOKS like". I do make allowances, but...yeah. Port /=/ Ocean front!

Date: 2013-08-14 01:09 am (UTC)So many Aussie actors...but I think they're not allowed to use their actual Australian accents. Because it doesn't sound 'Australian' to US audiences - not the way Steve Irwin or Paul Hogan does.
When I go to the US, the first place most people guess for me is the UK, not Australia. The 'strine' accent that's so commonly held up as the Australian accent is the country accent - pretty much the social equivalent of the US Deep South (hick) or the British Cockney.
And so it's easier to get a non-Australian actor to imitate an "Australian accent" than to try to persuade an Australian actor to put on something that US audiences will recognise as 'Australian'.
