One of the things I really love about the Tolkien fandom is that it forces people to be creative. If you want to write slash, you don't have to stretch that much, but if you want to write anything else, you have to work for it. This has led to some excellent genderflip stories (of which the as yet unfinished The Secret is far and away the best), but HOBBIT fics are also tackling racism and prejudice, family and definitions thereof, and, thanks to Bifur, quite a few stories where characters deal with brain injuries.
Most recently, there is Which Had No Stone, an absolutely beautiful look at Bifur remembering that he used to remember. The descriptions of how his brain has reworked itself make total sense in-universe, and the writing is gorgeous. I had a lot of feelings.
