Today on the Blog, I talk in defense of princesses. Even though most of them can defend themselves:

There are going to be quite a few new babies in my life in the next couple of months, and since at least one of them is probably going to be a girl, I’ve been spending more time than usual lately obsessing about princesses.

(I am very proud of this one, which probably means I've made a million mistakes and will also gravely insult someone, but HERE GOES!)

Very nice! As the mother of a little girl, I decided early on that avoiding the princess thing was not an option, but controlling it might be possible. And as a result, I've found some awesome stories for my daughter. I like your examination of what makes a good princess. One of the things I like about Barbie movies is that when Barbie is a princess, duty to her kingdom and people are always at the forefront of the story.

I'm quite glad to have a mum check in! :)

That is so cool about the Barbie movies!

You make excellent points -- I was nodding along the whole way, because you articulated many things I knew but had not put in clear words.

We need good stories about responsibility and consequences and leadership, and all the ones you recommend certainly count.
