I'm reading the Weta Chronicles book, and mostly it is "OMG, PRETTY!", but there are a few things I wanted to mention:
Mostly the book is the evolution of concept art for various costumes and places. It's funny: some of the dwarves have two sketches. Bofur has approximately eleventy billion. There are notes about how the motifs in Thorin's stuff are mirrored in Kili and Fili. BASICALLY I LOVE IT.
There are also interesting scenes we haven't got yet, either because they were left out or because their time has not yet come. For example, Dan Hannah played Gerontius Took at one of the Old Took's birthday parties, specifically the one where BabyHobbit!Bilbo met Gandalf. To that, I can only say: we wants it, precious.
There's also a cool note about the locket Gloin wears, which apparently contains a picture of his wife and of Gimli. This is ten kinds of cool, but leads me to a point about dwarf humour that I'm probably going to complain about later. To wit:
Legolas: Who is that hideous creature?
Gloin: That's my wife.
...is an excellent example of something that is not funny. Well, it's funny, unfortunately, but it's not the nice kind of funny.
Legolas: Who is that hideous creature?
Gloin: That's my son.
...on the other hand, is about fifteen kinds of funny. Just saying.
There's also a two page spread of the Dwarves' boots. And so, so much weaponry. And I haven't even had time to get to the wizards, the elves, the maps, the burglar contract or any of the locations yet!
Basically it's an expensive beautiful book that I do not regret buying at 40% off even one tiny bit.
Thursday. I can go again on Thursday.

Date: 2012-12-20 01:54 pm (UTC)Going again tomorrow. Having bought a card that makes it €6.15 to see a 3D film, I don't feel guilty as the tickets are kinda pre-bought this way.
BTW, what did you think of the HFR 3D compared to the 'normal' 3D? Unless you saw it in 2D...

Date: 2012-12-20 01:59 pm (UTC)So basically I'm asking whether other people can see the vast improvement HFR gives 3D. As Elijah said in one of the V-logs, it's like you're in it.

Date: 2012-12-30 09:35 pm (UTC)But I've been entertaining myself trying to pick up as many details from the movie as I can...like how Bombur fights with a FREAKING LADLE (which, btw, I tweeted about that the other day and STEPHEN FREAKING HUNTER retweeted me!), and Oin has my favourite fighting style and the sets of brothers all have matching hair styles and similar clothing patterns and WHY DO I LOVE THE DWARVES SO MUCH?
Oh right: teamy, family goodness.
