I just re-read my review of SON OF NEPTUNE and saw my comment about how it was less frenetic than the original PJ series. This book? FREN-FREAKING-ETIC. But with seven main characters and approximately a hundred thousand side quests, that's really not a surprise. And everyone bonded! Which was great.
FEEEEEEEEEEEEEELINGS, omg! I think the central idea of the book was the concept of strength and weakness. It's bound to happen when you have SEVEN demigods in close quarters, and I really enjoyed watching them all wish so hard they were one another, only to realize what they had to offer. This is particularly true of Piper (PIPER!!!), and, to a lesser and entirely different degree, Leo, but Percy and Jason absolutely broke my heart.
Percy is so OLD now. He's nearly 17 and he saw a possible future at the Roman camp, but he has NO IDEA if it'll work in the Greek side, but he's got Annabeth, and...UGH, PRECIOUS BABIES!
I hope Frank and Hazel get more to do in the next book. I mean, they had PLENTY to do, and they really shone, but I miss their POV.
I'm stalling. What I really want to talk about is Annabeth. I've mentioned (about a million times), that I am totally an Athena girl, and always have been, and this was certainly a book for Athena girls. I won't spoil it, but USING HER BRAIN and SHOOTING DOWN SEXISM WHERE'ER SHE FINDS IT, OMG. It was beautiful.
I also need to flip out about how Riordan portrayed the "split" between the Greek and Roman aspects of the gods. With Gaea screwing around, they get multiple personalities. It affects some of them less, but because the Romans were douchebags to Athena, it has pretty much RUINED her. MY HEART! It was awful. And the split in Athena, the split between her children as Athena and her children as Minerva, that is what causes civil wars.
I can't believe it's a whole other YEAR until the next one. I mean, it always is, but SHEESH.
Some favourite lines:
"It's a famous spot from the American Civil War."
"I'm Canadian, actually."
"Whatever."
"Perhaps later, if I don't have to kill you, I will share my brownie recipe."
"Hercules, huh? That guy was like the STARBUCKS of Ancient Greece. Everywhere you turn - there he is"
"But you're also my half brother, which means all the flying horses in the world are also my - you know what? Let's forget it."
"It's amazing what you can do with an Archimedes sphere, a girl who can sense things underground, and a weasel."
"I was the weasel."
9/10, because Annabeth is AWESOME and like I was going to give the ATHENA book anything shy of a high number. ;)

Date: 2012-10-08 07:49 am (UTC)I'm just annoyed that with all the incredible stuff she got to do, with the book named for HER godly parent, she doesn't even merit the cover? UGH.
