I'm on record somewhere talking about my failure to connect with City of Fallen Angels, book four in this series. I very, very happy to report that City of Lost Souls was back on track, and a book I very much enjoyed reading.

CoFA suffered a great deal from "OH GOD, I HAVE TO WRITE SIX BOOKS NOW?" syndrome in that Clare had tied off everything so nicely in City of Glass. And on top of that was the weird Simon/Everyone Else thing. And Alec didn't show up until halfway through. And Clary just needed to get rescued a lot.

But, man, City of Lost Souls suffered from none of that. Clary was fiercely independent (sometimes to her own detriment), and the one REALLY STUPID thing she did was written in such a way that you could understand why, in that moment, she did it. And then later, when she came to regret it, she learned her damn lesson and it gave her the strength to do something very difficult.

Izzy is so awesome. Every time I think she can't find new and interesting ways to be awesome, she does. It's lovely.

The Maia/Jordan thing still makes me uncomfortable, but at least it's not being written as "easy", and Maia is still loyal to Luke (ie. the pack) above all else. I'm sure the promise she made to save Luke won't in ANY WAY come back to bite them in the ass. ;)

SIMON, OH, SIMON! I bounced off of him SO HARD at the beginning of this whole thing, and then started to love him when he couldn't say the God anymore, and felt cut off from his Jewish heritage (not the least because of how being a vampire affected non-Christians!), and then even when he was being stupid about girls in the last book, I loved him, and this book WHEN HE REALIZED HE COULD SAY THE NAME OF GOD AGAIN, *dies*.

Alec and Magnus absolutely broke my heart. I can't even TALK about it. Which is too bad, because the things that Alec says (about people reacting to his coming out) are some of the most powerful sections of the book and I AM HEARTBROKEN, OMG!

AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATIS! That made me SO SAD. As soon as Aline was all "She lives alone!", I was all "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!", and then....SO SAD!

I also really love all the hints and winks about the Clockwork series (due to break my heart in December, I'm SURE of it!). Nothing was overdone, but above and beyond the part where they're related, it's always nice to see the extra effort put into the details.

Oh, and Jace was there too. ;)

9/10 for making me laugh, causing terrible concern, reducing me to tears, and because Latin is always fun (when you're not doing it for school).
