Book #38: Timepiece, by Myra McEntire

grav_ityConfession: back in my review of HOURGLASS, I referred to Kaleb as "basically my worst nightmare in a human being", and he continued to be that in this book WHICH HE NARRATES, but because of the progression of his story, I came around to not hyperventilating every time Kaleb had a scene, which was handy, because he was in all of them.
So in theory, I bounce right off Kaleb because I always bounce off Kaleb. I bounced off Logan Echolls and Spike and Loki and all of them. But they always played the villain, and Kaleb is not the villian. He's just going through a very annoying phase. And fortunately he has a bunch of people handy who will yell at him until he snaps out of it.
Which he kind of does. A lot of HOURGLASS was about Emerson finding out her powers and how she could use them. In TIMEPIECE, even though Kaleb already knows what his power is, he has allowed himself to be manipulated into thinking that it's not worth much. When he finally stands up and stops acting like an idiot, the results are amazing. I found myself actually kind of liking him. :)
So that is how I came to very much like a book in spite of getting off on ENTIRELY the wrong foot with the narrator.
Leaving Kaleb aside, the other characters were also a great deal of fun. I love Em so much, and getting to see more of Lily was even better. It was great to see them all work together and come into themselves as the story progressed.
The time travel/temporal manipulation was also really well done. I was impressed at how the story just kept growing and growing, and folding in on itself again and again. There was a tremendous amount of attention to detail, and that's always a great thing to see. The writing was impeccable, and the dialogue was top notch.
AND THAT ENDING! :)
So 8.5/10 for action, well plotted time travel, Lily being awesome and all of the geek references.
