I read this book on a windy night, with the glass rattling and the house shaking, and the rain tapping on the panes. I recommend doing that, if you possibly can.
THE NEAR WITCH is a story of destiny and choices and consequences and wishes and love. So, you know, obviously I really liked it. Victoria writes the moors so well you can feel them under your shoes and smell them in the air. I was never entirely sure if this was a fairy tale, a gothic romance, an adventure or a ghost story. I'm thinking it can be read as any or all of the above, which is really kind of cool.
I loved Lexi's growth and strength, and the way the witches and the story were treated. It was very "small town" and very real, and part of what made the story so interesting was how it all felt so plausible...even when it dealt with magic.
Also, isn't the title just deliciously intriguing? I love it.
8.5/10 for a wonderful atmosphere, a courageous heroine, and for a truly wonderful rush at the end.
