Today on the blog, I talk about CanLit and genre, and issue an apology to Margaret Atwood.

So many things going on in the States right now (and a few here in the UK) that make me look at the Handmaid's Tale in renewed awe and not a little fear. Another Margaret Atwood book that rocked my world when I read it was Cat's Eye which is one of the best books about what monsters little girls can be especially when they style themselves your 'friend'. Brought certain memories of my unlovely childhood right back into focus. Atwood is a writer to be cherished. We're lucky to have her.

I'd heard of the book but I'd honestly thought it was some sort of chaucer-era tale (which makes sense since that's what the title is a reference to)

I read the summary on wikipedia.

I'm terrified of the description of what led to the (thankfully crushed) theocracy, 'cause that's all on fox news.

I'll be moving to Canada or Mexico.

(I don't think I can actually read the book 'cause that will just make me depressed and angry and I am already well aware of what shit is going down, down here, so whats the point in putting myself in a worse mood, and stressing myself out.)

also I LOL so hard when scifi goes mainstream.

Twilight and the Hunger Games and The Time Traveller's wife. they all make me shake my head.

"OMG THAT WAS AMAZING AND SO DIFFERENT"

uh huh. yeah. Oh hey! have you tried this stuff!? It's bread, but, get this, it comes SLICED

I think it's the single greatest triumph of LOST. That show managed to get otherwise "reasonable" people HOOKED on sci-fi simply by NOT ADMITTING THEY WERE SCI-FI until half-way through season two! :)

And yes, I imagine that the Handmaid's Tale will trigger the HECK out of me, but at this point, I feel I owe it to...a Great Canadian Author to at least give it a shot! It was written in 1985, FCOL!
