Kate Watches The Korra Pilot
Mar. 19th, 2012 02:50 pm(There are many, MANY spoilers. And also FEELINGS. And also CAPS.)
Some backstory! It is important to understand that I was at my house, watching an episode of “Firefly” with
faith_king, having just returned from a lovely day in Stratford with
rj_anderson. I had also eaten a lot of cupcakes.
Anyway, I got an email from RJ, and since I was only half reading (and half watching Firefly), I thought at first it was from
emmaorgana, because it started off like this:
“KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE!”
Then I actually read the message, realized it was a link to the Korra pilot, and reached over to pause the DVD. What happened next can only be captured in directed quotation.
Faith: What? What is it?
Kate: I...I think I have the pilot for Korra.
Faith was sitting in our lazyboy recliner at the time, reclined all the way and tucked in under a blanket, because our basement is ALWAYS cold. It took her approximately a nanosecond to get from that comfortable repose to perching on the arm of my chair. I’m pretty sure she used airbending to do it.
Anyway, we let the link buffer a bit, and then we started watching the whole thing. She watched it again that night, and I listened along, and then the next morning I watched it a few more times. By this point, the link was dead, but I hadn’t shut the window, so I could still watch it.
What follows is my best attempt to stitch together my IMMEDIATE REACTIONS and my More Sober Reflections, as we start, once again, down the path beside the Avatar.
This time, the legend begins with Water.
FIRST: I love that they are using The Avatars for the “Earth/Fire/Air/Water” bit at the opening! And I also love that Tenzin is doing the narration, even though he is clearly going to be very different from Katara. Having a grown-up do it just strikes me as COOL. I have no idea if this will change for the actual series, but I love it.
SECOND: OMG, SUKI IS IN THE “FAMILY” PORTRAIT! (!!!!!) Someone is going to stitch that together, right? AND MAYBE PHOTOSHOP IN MEI? But really, SOMEONE IS DOING THIS, RIGHT? *faints*
THIRD: This will be the last numbered thing, probably, but I love that they couldn’t just be all “Hey guys! Get out of the Earth Kingdom!” because it had been a hundred years and the Fire Nation was kind of entrenched. Turning the colonies into a kind of melting pot is, technically, what the Fire Nation had in mind all the time, but of course with Aang to steer it, it goes much better and actually works. THE FUSION, YOU GUYS. I MIGHT PASS OUT.
FOUR: I LIE ALL THE TIME! And also I LOVE THE AANG THEME SONG PART! And how MUCH they were able to build in Republic City in a NOT LONG period of time. It’s really cool, the idea of what everyone working together can do.
FIVE: BOOK ONE IS CALLED “AIR”! I think I knew that, but I still makes me happy.
SIX: I love The White Lotus so much! I’m glad they’re still around. I hope they’re not EVIL! That would make me SAD. (I’ve decided to keep numbering, by the way. Let’s see if I can hit triple digits. We’re only about 40 seconds in, so it’s possible!)
SEVEN: “I’M THE AVATAR! YOU GOTTA DEAL WITH IT!” Okay, so I probably watched this clip about eight thousand times, and thought, every time, “OH, I HOPE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE SEE HER!”, even while I assumed it would be a flashback. AND THEN IT WAS THE FIRST TIME WE SAW HER! I don’t think Faith had seen the clip at all, so she was DYING, and I, well, I fell in love.
(I love that she can bend THREE ELEMENTS as a CHILD!)
EIGHT: CAN I JUST SAY HOW MUCH I’VE MISSED THE FIGHTING ON THIS SHOW? BECAUSE I HAVE! It never stops being AWESOME.
NINE: KATARAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! OMG, OMG, OMG. I am bracing myself for the inevitable fandom backlash of people who are upset that Katara hasn’t somehow taken over the world or at least become head of the White Lotus, but I really think she’d be all “Screw politics, I’m going to teach waterbending to EVERYONE.” so I’m okay with it.
TEN: KORRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! She is so FIERCE. I love her. I love how PROUD she is and how much she LOVES bending. It’s a neat opposite of Aang, who was about 90% spiritual and could get kind of tedious sometimes. I can’t wait until she meets Kyoshi! (OH GOD, I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL SHE MEETS KYOSHI! AND ALSO ROKU! AND ALSO AANG! AND ALSO…yeah, this is going to be the best thing ever.)
ELEVEN: Who was her Earth Bending teacher?
TWELVE: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, TENZIN!
THIRTEEN: OMG, she is SO SOKKA! I mean, I don’t know HOW, but yes.
FOURTEEN: Okay, I wasn’t sold on the bear-dog thing, but it’s really pretty and moves very well. And I guess she doesn’t need to fly as much. I JUST REALLY LOVE FLYING BISON, OKAY?
FIFTEEN: OMG, they built this ENTIRE CAMP-CITY-THING to keep her safe! WITH GUARDS! And people who always watch her (one of my fave details, btw, is that there are always guards in her scenes). DEEEEETAILS! I love it.
SIXTEEN: THE MUSIC! I mean, the Avatar music was always great, but THIS IS AMAZING. I WILL TALK MORE ABOUT THIS LATER.
SEVENTEEN: FLYING BISON, OMG, HOLD ME THERE’S A FLYING BISON! AND BABY AANG’S! WITH BABY AIRBENDING! OMG, THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED. And when they greet Katara? I PRETTY MUCH DIED. “Unhand me, strange woman!” OH, THIS GENE POOL!
(TENZIN! I love him SO MUCH. I want to know ALL THE THINGS. Like why he is calm! And why he married a non-bender! And, more importantly, WHY SHE MARRIED HIM! AND SO ON!)
EIGHTEEN: Okay, I can’t tell this in “present” tense, because it’s just too funny to tell you what happened the first time I watched it. When Jinora started talking, calling Katara “gran gran”, both Faith and I were all “Dawwwww!” and then when she ended it up with “What happened to Zuko’s mom?” we both dove for the space bar on the lap top to pause the play back while we had SEIZURES of laughter. Faith is a pacer, so she got up and walked around the living room having hysterics in motion, but I’m a flouncer, so I basically sprawled out of the whole chesterfield and LAUGHED UNTIL I WAS TEARBENDING. I’m pretty sure I strained a muscle in my abdomen. It was a good five minutes before we could get hold of ourselves and hear Katara’s answer. In hindsight, probably one of the best moments of my life.
NINETEEN: And then of course Ikki is a mini-Aang, and we get no answer. I LOVE THIS SHOW TO PIECES. I also love how Katara is all “Honey, I kind of raised your grandfather. Trust me when I say that there is nothing you can throw down that I cannot pick up and throw back at you.”
TWENTY: I LOVE PEMA! IWANT TO KNOW ALL THE THINGS ABOUT HER. I am okay with fandom making them up in lieu of an actual explanation, as long as it’s on par with “Guide Me Home”.
TWENTY-ONE: Love the shout out to Katara’s waterbending skills with her appraisal of Pema’s pregnancy! CAN YOU IMAGINE WATERBENDING YOUR BABY IN THE WOMB? THAT WOULD BE COOL!
TWENTY-TWO: KAYA AND BOOMI! I love it. I also love that Tenzin never wants to talk about his childhood. TENZIN! THAT ONLY MAKES ME WANT IT MORE!
TWENTY-THREE: I love that they came down and told her in person. I mean, for story purposes obviously they HAVE to, but I love it for character reasons as well. Tenzin is SO SERIOUS and CONFLICTED and WHY IS TENZIN MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER?
(At first I was all “Hey, um, maybe we should be a bit nicer to Tenzin in the whole ‘YOU HAVE TO TEACH ME!’ thing, but then I remembered that he’s the only one who can! So really it sucks the most for PEMA because she’s the one who has to do things like RAISE NOMADS and such, which makes me even more curious about their relationship.)
(Also, because it is driving me crazy, WHO IS TENZIN NAMED FOR?)
TWENTY-FOUR: I AM SO GLAD THEY ARE MOSTLY GROWN-UPS THIS TIME! I mean, I love the Gaang a lot, but at the same time: GROWN-UPS FOR THE WIN. They are having this whole talk LIKE ADULTS and Korra is nearly an adult herself, and I REALLY LOVE THAT. Also, there is SO MUCH WORLD-BUILDING happening right now! I AM IN LOVE.
TWENTY-FIVE: THEY HAVE A FLYING BISON! And he’s slightly different from Appa. OMG, APPAAAAAAA! I MISS HIM ALREADY!
TWENTY-SIX: Faith put this to words, but Korra’s slump while Tenzin and family fly away is SO AANG it makes me hurt a bit inside (and there are guards in the back of this scene too! LOVE IT!)
TWENTY-SEVEN: KATARA IS THE BEST, EVER. EVER! I just love her SO MUCH. “My brother and many of my friends are gone” ALL THE FEELS! Who is gone? WHO IS LEFT? Who got married? ETC
(I really hope that at some point in the narrative they need to work with Azula, who is old and bitter and still more competent than everyone else who has ever lived. And they can’t really trust her, but they have to work together, and, and…I DON’T EVEN KNOW, but it’s AWESOME in my head.)
TWENTY-EIGHT: I love that she said good-bye to her parents before she left. An Avatar with an Actual Family is going to be fun, I think!
TWENTY-NINE: STEAMSHIPS! WITH PRETTY COLOURS! AND…CARS? What the heck is going on? I DON’T CARE, I LOVE IT! FUSION!
THIRTY: When Korra gets off the boat, I remember thinking “She is going to be a TRAINWRECK”, and then she was, and it was beautiful. Republic City comes at us so quickly, but it’s so well done, and it’s VITAL that she see it for herself, before Tenzin can “protect” her from it, but once again it’s a choice that makes sense both from a story and character perspective. I LOVE IT.
THIRTY-ONE: I HAVE TO TALK ABOUT THE MUSIC AGAIN. BECAUSE I LOVE IT. AND IT IS AWESOME.
THIRTY-TWO: The only kind of dumb decision Korra makes here is to go on a trip with no money. This was a theme in Avatar the first time around, and one that I really liked, so I have trouble believing that Korra would do this. But at the same time, she’s been SO SHELTERED that I buy it (pun intended), and I also buy that Katara was all “Eh, she’ll learn!” and let her go without bringing it up (I’m less sure about her PARENTS, but whatevs!). The REAL reason I’m okay with it, though, is that it allows us to have the scene in the park, which shows her, more than the thugs will in a few minutes, that something is Not of the Good in Republic City.
THIRTY-THREE: And then we meet The Equalists. Who…kind of have a point. Benders are, usually, entitled, as Korra proves RIGHT AWAY. This was also something they dealt with in the original series. Each of Sokka, Suki, Mei and Ty Li had an AMAZING power, but they still weren’t benders. It’s…troublesome. And I love that it is going to be the plot.
THIRTY-FOUR: OMG, THE TRIAD! IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE! AND I LOVE IT! One of every flavour! And of course Korra can deal with them, but WHO ELSE COULD?
(OMG, THE FIGHT SCENE! And I’m not sure how to say this politely, but I LOVE how NOT WHITE every member of that group was, except the Firebender, who was chromatically white and had a non-Caucasian bone structure. THIS SHOW!)
THIRTY-FIVE: LIN BEI FONG could, that’s who! I want to know about her too! Because Toph never really struck me as the law enforcement type (not to mention her feelings about cities), and yet HERE WE ARE and I would LIKE AN EXPLANATION and OMG, DID YOU SEE THAT STATUE OF TOPH? WHAT IS GOING ON?
THIRTY-SIX: I love that Lin Bei Fong has a point: bending does not do well in cities (unless you are trying to destroy them). I look forward to what complications this presents. And also to cool fight scenes, because the metal benders had a REALLY COOL STYLE and Korra will probably have to learn it at some point.
THIRTY-SEVEN: Lin and Tenzin played together as children, right? RIGHT?
THIRTY-EIGHT: Ahahahahahaha, Tenzin has the good sense to know that no one crosses Katara. She doesn’t NEED politics or the White Lotus. She will just do WHATEVER SHE WANTS, and I love her.
THIRTY-NINE: BABY AIRBENDERS! And Jinora carries Meelo! OMG, I LOVE THEM! And then of course Tenzin comes around! AND THEN SHE PICKS ALL FOUR OF THEM UP! OMG, I LOVE HER!
FORTY: PLEASE TELL ME THAT THE RADIO IS SOMEHOW RELATED TO AIR and/or METALBENDING!
FORTY-ONE: The Antibenders are creepy. MASKS ARE ALWAYS CREEPY.
FORTY-TWO: THIS IS GOING TO BE AMAZING. I wasn't sure how this show was going to work, or what it was going to be about, or even what the world was going to look like, and everything seems to indicate that it was SO WORTH THE WAIT. I am very excited about finding out what happens, and learning more about these people and how the world works now. And there are GROWN-UPS! And Korra is SEVENTEEN! It is going to be amazing. I AM SO UNPREPARED.
(I swear it's 42 by accident.)

Date: 2012-04-12 02:37 am (UTC)I actually totally adore how much of a point the Equalists have, it's a nice switch from the Fire Nation who were just collectively awesome, even though they were TRYING TO BREAK THE WORLD.
GREATEST ACCIDENTAL 42 POST!
