On the blog this morning, I talk about how I misunderstood the concept of "picking teams" for a long time after I read Twilight, and then became kind of (even more) annoyed when I figured out what it actually meant.

It's no secret that I love being a shipper. I tend to look for the romance between characters. It's often a factor in deciding what becomes a beloved fandom or not. But I could not imagine trying to pair up characters if I didn't admire them as individuals first. So I definitely get what you're saying. If it's ONLY about the pairing, but there's nothing to love about the characters in their own right - or worse, if the character seems to exist only for the sake of the pairing - that's not something in which I'm interested.

I think it says something of me that there are very, very few pairings I follow where the female character is not my favourite character (or at least I like her more than I like him). In fact, that's probably why I never got on the Daniel/Vala train. I really disliked them together, but Vala was just so...yeah, it's hard to describe.

I often had mixed feelings about Daniel and Vala. There was a part of me that thought they had chemistry, and could possibly actually end up together... but not the way it was going in the show during those final seasons. I liked Vala well enough, but thought she'd definitely picked up some negative coping mechanisms during her rough life. Which meant she acted toward Daniel so often in the most inappropriate ways. Any hints of a relationship, even the possible what-if scenario presented in the series finale, were way too volatile for my liking.
