New on the blog today is a post about picking favourites and why I am really bad at it.

The Perils of Favouritism

(Also, I talk about why I love YA, why it's dangerous to tell a bookseller your favourite book, and why Doctor Who has ruined the way I think forever.)

Yeah. What you said. ;)

For all my love of sci-fi, I've read very little of it outside of Star Wars and Stargate books. For all my love of romance, I very seldom (if ever) find something I really like in the "romance" section at the bookstore. But I think you've made a good point that in YA, there are lots of good stories out there, from a varieity of sub-genres.

And there's a YA book about a girl who plays a cello? This piques my interest. At least a little.

If I Stay, by Gayle Foreman. Bring kleenex. Lots and lots of kleenex.

(Seriously, I started reading the book at The Second Cup, got about 10 pages in and was all "I...can't read this book in public".)

Also, I think there's a cello player in Maggie Stiefvater's "Ballad", but now I'm starting to doubt myself and think she plays the harp...

Ah, that one was on your list too. I have downloaded a sample for my Nook to check out when I have time. Thanks.

I'm all over the YA! That's typically the genre I go back to, though, like you, favorites include (but are not limited to) LotR, CoN, etc. Some of the heavier fantasy stuff I will try my hand at, but I'll typically go about it differently - like I'm willing to do Game of Thrones, but I'm going to LISTEN to it instead of read it, and the ONLY reason I borrowed book four of Wheel of Time this weekend was because it was being borrowed from a cute guy (no, seriously).

Regardless of that - I just had to let you know that I'm currently in the middle of reading the Song of the Lionness quartet. I'm about 40 pages away from being finished the first and then I'll be moving on to the second. I think I squealed a little on the inside when I saw The Woman Who Rides Like A Man on your list. ;)

I am not using my spoilery Pierce icon. BUT I AM THINKING OF IT!
