I have just realized that I never posted the photos of the cake I made for The Boy's engagement party!

It was held on New Year's Eve at the local curling rink, so I went with the obvious theme: CURLING!

Originally, I planned to make cupcakes that looked like curling rocks, but then I decided that they would be too much work and probably not look very good if I made them delicious, so I went for two slab cakes instead.

Scale was a bit of an issue, and as usual I forgot to leave some of the icing uncoloured for the detail work, but I'm still pretty pleased with how it turned out. How often, after all, am I going to be able to represent my favourite curlers in gummi form?

This is the ice before play begins. Like the Bowling Alley Cake, I went for Kit Kat liners. There was no string licorice, so my hog lines are a bit ugly. My house is by no means to scale, and I kind of forgot the tee-line...but I am fond of the hacks.

Next time I think I'd make a longer cake, the better to have an actual house.

Play begins! Somehow this curling rink is equipped with overhead cameras!

Here we see gummi!Glenn Howard, who has waved off his sweepers now that the shot is perfectly aligned.

Saskatchewan is, as always, on damage control.

The sweepers are the unsung heroes of curling. Especially the leads, whose throws are never televised.

The aforementioned sweepers are drawing to the button, for two.

gummi!Kevin Martin and gummi!John Morris are outlining the shot where, in his signature move, Johnny Mo will pick and roll off all three red rocks, landing far enough away from the other yellow rock that a double take out is impossible (for anyone besides him, of course. Nothing is impossible for Johnny Mo).

The only real surprise with this cake was the degree to which everyone made fun of me for having such a well developed story. Jen understood me, though. We watched a lot of curling together up to and including Vancouver.

Thank you, darling. Next time we will have to not be SO distracted by TV and make a cake instead. Or meet in a place where there's a DVD player in the kitchen...

"The Curling Cake" sounds like a DW episode. I'm picturing this giant, sentient cake that extends cake tendrils that curl in and out and it's trustful of mankind just about as long as it takes someone to try and take a bite.

Bwuahaha. Someone should so totally write that. ;-)

It's going to have to be you, then. Curling is a sacred sport, and I would never denigrate it by making fun of its name, even for an episode of Doctor Who.

Hehe, I meant no disrespect to Canada nor to curling. Mostly the bizarre imagery and the alliteration jumped out at me. ;-)

Also, the cake looks scrumptious!

Oh, I might have to show these pictures to my father-in-law who loves curling and cake. Would you mind? I think these are positively inspirational!

Sure!

(If you want more specific instructions and my ideas on how to improve it, let me know.)

(My first run at a cake is never error-proof. But I have good ideas about this one!)

The only real surprise with this cake was the degree to which everyone made fun of me for having such a well developed story.

Not just backstory, but conversations.

And also, the chocolate one was delicious. (I was entirely too stuffed to try the vanilla as well.)
