Book #6: Cinder, by Marissa Meyer
Jan. 12th, 2012 07:55 pmI think I'm pretty much tapped out on Cinderella. Which is handy, because I think I've read most of them now? Or at least I'm close to having read them? I have no idea.
ANYWAY: While Cinder kind of gets the shaft for being last in an eight day, six book marathon (and it was the third Cinderella I read THIS WEEK just to make things worse), I will say that I very much enjoyed it, and that I am kind of pumped to discover that it's a series.
I'm kind of almost relieved that I will never have to sell this book to customers, because I'm not sure how well "Cinderella, but set in a future where there are people on the moon who aren't exactly human, OH, AND ALSO SHE'S A CYBORG." would fly. Also, it was nice to just read a book.
I will say that this is, far and away, the coolest use of The Shoe I have encountered so far. It was set up so well and executed perfectly.
The Big Reveal at the end was kind of obvious, because the missing princess in Act I HAS to turn up by Act VI, but I think it was supposed to be? If only because the Tiny Reveal (why the Draft existed) was WAY COOLER and made me feel much better about having fallen so hard for Dr. Erland. Because it's all about me. ;)
I think it's delightfully bizarre that of all the Cinderellas I've read lately, this one follows the traditional story the closest in terms of structure. Like "Shadows on the Moon", there was a larger question of Identity floating around in this story, and someone it managed to be a different angle, which was neat. Obviously, the whole "cyborgs are less than human" thing was uncomfortable (especially because cyborgs were BORN HUMAN and just had some kind of accident? Or something?), but the resulting relationship between Cinder and her "owner" was even MORE uncomfortable (I had to put the book down when Cinder was "volunteered" and breathe for a while).
I'm going with 8.5/10 for being something I never would have thought of in a million years, for being very well written, for giving Canada a nod (and one line!), and THE SHOE!
New plan: Nap for a week and then it's on to "Across the Universe" and "Stolen Away"
