It was Cinderella's year, apparently.
This book was...not what I expected. Which is weird, because I had absolutely no idea what it was about, because "A imaginative take on Cinderella". I don't think I was expecting the whole IDENTITY, YOU HAVE IT, thing, and for the survivor's guilt to turn out quite that way.
(I've just realized, btw, that this is going to be the WORST BOOK REVIEW EVER. I have no attention span right now and I apologize. This book was VERY GOOD.)
Anyway!
So without spoiling the end, I liked it! I liked every aspect of it! And no one even died in a fire!
I loved that even though Suzume had at least two fairy god"mothers", both of them kind of let her make her own decisions. They just...paved the way. Or helped her find the asphalt. Or...something.
(Worst. Review. Ever.)
Okay, list time, or it'll be completely incoherent:
1. ASHES AND CINDERS! I loved that part!
2. SHE LOSES A SHOE! Because every story needs a memorable detail!
3. Comeuppance!
4. Diversity! In every way possible! I think!
5. Interesting super powers!
6. THE LONGEST BUILD UP, EVER. But it was never boring or tedious. You were just all "Oh, lordy, how is she getting out of this?"
7. ARGH, even the LIST isn't helping.
What I am trying to say is that this was an excellent book, that took a fascinating sample of the themes in Cinderella (primarily self-discovery) and made it into this HUGE THING that I very much enjoyed traveling through.
Oh, and there was a haiku battle! Sort of!
9/10, because I got exactly what I wanted and I'm pretty sure it didn't cost anyone their soul.
Also, I tried my best, but every time I read the name "Yue", all I could think was "My last girl-friend turned into the moon"; "Dude...that's rough.", and then I would snicker inappropriately.
(ETA: Yes, I know that is a misquote. It's a long story.)
