grav_ityYou know how sometimes a "middle book" is kind of pointless and filler-ish and doesn't really do anything, and sometimes it's "The Empire Strikes Back"?
THIS BOOK! I was worried that since I've read a lot more REALLY HIGH QUALITY Victorian stuff (not to mention learned a lot more about it...), that there would be things that threw me out of the book. And yeah, sometimes the dialogue was a bit weird, but I DON'T CARE because...well, let's make a numbered list.
1. MAGNUS BANE. OMG, I LOVE HIM. I mean, I knew he was my favourite character, but LAWDS, I love him. I read the coda in the back of "Clockwork Angel" at work yesterday, and...GUH. I JUST LOVE HIM, OKAY!
2. WOOLSEY SCOTT. Okay, so he was in, like, TWO SCENES, but he BRINGS HIS OWN SUGAR TONGS in case his host's tongs are silver (he's a werewolf), and HE DRESSES LIKE A BUFFOON and I KIND OF LOVE HIM.
3. Charlotte Branwell. OMG, CHARLOTTE! One of the things that bugged me about Clockwork Angel was the uneven gender politics, but this book was SO much better about it. AND THEN CHARLOTTE AND HENRY FOUND OUT THEY LOVE EACH OTHER! WHICH IS MY BULLETPROOF KINK! *pets them both*
4. JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEM!
5. I WAS SO MAD ABOUT JESSAMINE! I loved her! AND SHE HAD TO BE STUPID! Because no one took her seriously! But then she told Tessa about wearing a more sturdy hat if she didn't want people to know she'd been kissing in carriages! I AM SO CONFLICTED.
6. SOPHIE! AND GIDEON! THIS WILL ALL END IN TEARS!
7. Speaking of ending in tears: I have never been so conflicted about getting the 'ship I want. There is NO WAY this can end well. NONE AT ALL. But that said, Jem is CLEARLY the better choice! Because even if you are a douchebag for a reason, YOU ARE STILL A DOUCHEBAG. And just because you are Victorian and too repressed to TALK ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS doesn't make it any better.
(Besides, Will still clearly thinks of Tessa as a possession, and THAT'S JUST NOT COOL.)
Also, if you're immortal? YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE WHO BELIEVES IN REINCARNATION! It's just practical.

8. Tessa was SO MUCH BETTER in this book! With the Agency-having! And the thinking! And the general awesomeness! I liked her so much more.

10. And another new family member who is possibly out to SCREW EVERYONE OVER. *sighs*
8.5/10, for being a markedly better book than #1, for having scenes that made me laugh, for COSTUME PORN, for having fun immortals and for...MAGNUS BANE. ;)
That said, if any of them turn out to be Jack the Ripper, I am SO DONE. ;)

I'm sort of amused about how much Didn't Happen in this book and yet I feel drained. LOL So much Talking About Our Feelings, I guess.
I think Gideon/Sophie will end up just fine. Clearly Sophie has Ascendent in her future storyline.
I've got Gabriel earmarked for self-sacrificial DEATH, though.
As far as the love triangle goes... I like Will/Tessa a bit better, but mostly (I will confess with as much brutal honesty as possible), I just like all the kissing. ;-)
