Sanctuary: Resistance
Nov. 6th, 2011 11:15 amI...think I liked it?
I know I liked the idea that Helen isn't right, necessarily. Or that it is at least possible for other people to be right. And I kind of loved the idea that Helen neglected to take into account the "human toll" in terms of the people she'd lose. Obviously, this episode was All About Nikola, but I couldn't help thinking of Abby as well and, let's be honest, Declan has got to be one of the more sought after employees in the UK right now. She may have saved the Sanctuary...but it might cost her the network. Because, really, Helen needs people in places like the places Abby and Nikola are in. Whether she likes it or not.
I LOVE THE IDEA OF AN UNDERGROUND RAIL ROAD! That totally should have been the B-Plot, and not More Things That Are Depressing. Because really, I got enough of that when SG1 "changed the rules". I don't need Sanctuary to do the same thing!
There was some concern about Nikola being held to a double standard (though I didn't read the post, as I was trying to stay spoiler free), and I think that Helen sort of...didn't do that. I mean, she took the mickey out of him, and even though he did the same to her...it didn't feel double standard-ish to me. I mean, yes it's worse than sending an FBI agent to get hives, but it's also, you know, well written. So I care less.
Oh, Nikola. Of course you do. It's all you ever wanted. And, like everything else, it goes COMPLETELY PEAR SHAPED. BUT SERIOUSLY, his face when he grabbed Helen after Henry disappeared? Another show would have given us a stupid line ("Why did he push me out of the way?"), but Sanctuary just let the actors have it and...GOD, it was awesome. And wireless electricity! I love it when the writers do their homework.
(Aside: I can't watch Jonathon Young talk about kids, but THE SCENE WITH HENRY WAS AMAZING. Actually, ALL THE SCENES with Henry were amazing! The expression on Ryan Robbins' face when Helen told him to take the generator apart? GOLDEN.)
Um...so a solid episode, but one I think I like more in my head than on screen, if that makes sense.
ALSO IT WAS A CLEVER TITLE! WELL DONE, SHOW!

What do you mean?
BUT SERIOUSLY, his face when he grabbed Helen after Henry disappeared?
Yes, OMGs!
Henry and Nikola need to have scenes together whenever Nikola is on the show.

I get what you mean.
You think the title is clever because it ties to "Normandy"?

Date: 2011-11-06 05:25 pm (UTC)And it's clever because it's a reference to electricity! And to all the problems Helen is running into! ;)

Date: 2011-11-06 05:13 pm (UTC)Yep, pretty much how I feel about it too. It was good and there was really great banter between Henry and Nikola, as always, and Helen was gorgeous, as always. :D
re: double standards, if you're talking about my post, I was talking more about fandom than Helen. :P in-show, I was pretty placated by Helen yelling at Nikola but even more placated by Henry saying "You betrayed the best friend you ever had" (go Henry!) and Nikola looking like he was actually kind of bothered by that. And then he redeemed himself by giving Helen all this helpful inside info. So I don't feel there's a double standard in-show, but fandom, we'll see. I haven't read as many reactions for this episode.

But yes. It's the little thing.s

Date: 2011-11-06 07:03 pm (UTC)My favorite part was Henry's line about him (Nikola) betraying his best friend. Because I think at the end of the day, shipping, no shipping whatever, Magnus and Tesla probably do consider one another best friends.
I have just...not felt B-plots this season at all. I'd almost rather they just not do them and focus on the main plots of the episodes instead of trying to work everyone in. Untouchable was fantastic in that it didn't really have a B-plot, same with Tempus.

Date: 2011-11-06 09:20 pm (UTC)I didn't mind Abby's plot, because I feel it will be important later, but...there's a difference to me between a B-plot and "half a show". Kate in "Awakening" was a B-plot. And it was awesome. This week, we got Helen And Tesla And Henry...and we got half a show.

Date: 2011-11-06 09:24 pm (UTC)I just can't stand putting something in that doesn't do anything to develop the episode/storyline, no matter what it is.

Date: 2011-11-06 09:26 pm (UTC)I mean, Kate's plot line in Awakening had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PLOT. AT ALL. But it was still AWESOME. And the Big Guy had that whole thing last season with the Priest that I thought was going to be huge...and then it wasn't. But it had direction and went places and stuff. This was just...I read the word shoehorn somewhere, and, yes.

Date: 2011-11-06 09:30 pm (UTC)IKR? Although speaking of B-plots, how glad was I to see Blonde!Magnus and Watson working a case in Tempus because it justified my in progress Magnus/Watson casefic? That pleased me.

Date: 2011-11-06 09:32 pm (UTC)Or maybe just a line...it was an exciting morning. But the scene where they're on the roof and look down on the Adam/Helen fight? BRILLIANCE!

Date: 2011-11-07 01:09 am (UTC)Oh, yes! This exactly, because I was sorta underwhelmed by it right after I finished it, but then a few minutes later I was writing my post and think about all the things I liked about it, and wondering if I was crazy!
But yes, there should have been action-y abnormal underground railroad scenes.

Date: 2011-11-12 12:50 am (UTC)I think my biggest issue with Tesla's episodes is they all follow the same structure and they're insanely predictable.
Act 1: there's a mystery/adventure. End of Act 1: Tesla is surprisingly involved. Act 2: Magnus and Tesla flirt and entertain the audience with their relationship. Tesla teases someone "less" than him. Shit goes down. Act 3: Tesla has an idea that doesn't work. Act 4: Tesla saves the day.
It's all rather cliche, and while it worked SO fucking well for The Five and even Sleepers, it just gets to be wearing.
But yeah, I enjoyed the episode. It was hilarious at times, fairly fast-paced (but predictable). I just want something new for Tesla. An actual PLOT surrounding him, I guess, instead of a random storyline that vaguely ties into the ongoing arc.
This all sounds insanely critical, but I actually did enjoy it, just more so in my head like you said.
