Sanctuary: Tempus
Oct. 8th, 2011 02:56 pmThe "coherent thoughts" version. ;)
Okay, so I loved it. That much is clear. And I was nervous beforehand, and I'm sure that once the euphoria wears off I'll be nervous for next week, but right now...well, let's just say it's a good thing that I didn't actually manage to eat any peanut butter cups whilst watching because I DON'T NEED ANY AMPLIFICATION.
Helen. Oh, Helen! I love that she came up shooting and proceeded to be COMPLETELY OFF THE RAILS for the rest of the episode. And I loved how that played against James, and how it played against Blonde!Helen. And, of course, how it played against John and Adam. Because...oh, Helen.
I loved, LOVED LOVED LOVED the blocking in the Blonde!Helen/John scene. I started freaking out as soon as he stepped up to her, because it was EXACTLY THE SAME AS NORMANDY, and then Blonde!Helen actually said the line and I had to stop the playback so that I could DIE OF JOY. THERE IS JAM IN THE SANDWICH, you guys! AND HELEN KNOWS IT! *pets them all*
(God, and Blonde!Helen's exit from that scene? HEARTBREAKING)
I also really loved the "Better?";"Much!" exchange. Because I am exactly that easy.
James was just TOO ADORABLE. Every scene was completely perfect. I loved the way he gentled Helen when she, quite literally, forgot her place. And we got a "Darling!" They are SO COMPLICATED (I got the impression that they are firmly in their Practical Arrangement, on again/off again stage, and I love them. The scene at the end nearly killed me.
(Past!James/Smartphone is totally my new OTP, I'm just saying. Please write me fic where he pocketed it without her knowing and...got really addicted to Angry Birds. I DON'T EVEN KNOW.)
I was so pleased with the John/Ripper/Jack plot line! I think I love it even more for the writers being subtle about it, letting us put the pieces together on our own, though I gather from a quick look that not everyone got the same impression I did. I never for a moment thought that this was "clearing" John for the 1888 murders, and adding Spring-Heeled Jack just made it cool (not the least because I totally wrote fic about how, in her "time off", Helen went around setting abnormals up for the Sanctuary so that when contact was made, they would be open to it). Sanctuary is very often overwritten, and I LOVE IT when it goes subtle on me.
Also? I loved the way in which the writers orchestrated the end of the episode: Blonde!Helen and James are tracking Spring-Heeled Jack, they see the lights of Helen and Adam's fight, they go see what's happening, they, inadvertently, set off past!Adam's psychotic break again. It wasn't heavy handed or overplayed, and the story made sense organically. I was SO IMPRESSED with it.
Imogen's death was a bit hackneyed, but there was really no other way around it. I love that events stay more or less the same, creating a perfect loop. I'm always nervous about time travel, but this turned out quite well AND it didn't even joss my fanfic all that much! EVERYBODY LIVES, ROSE! EVERYBODY LIVES!
I am sure I am forgetting something, but I'm hungry. *resumes flailing*

Date: 2011-10-08 10:42 pm (UTC)I totally got the Practical Arrangement vibe, too. They're just so sweet. JAMES WITH THE IPHONE, DEAR GOD. The Angry Birds image will be with me forever.
John and Helen. John. And. Helen. The threesome reference was everything. AND THE BLOCKING, I HADN'T EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT THE BLOCKING. IT IS EVEN MORE MY NEW FAVOURITE SCENE EVER NOW.
Yeah, the first reactions I read yesterday were people going a little nuts about John not really being the Ripper. Which amused me a little, ngl, since they're doing exactly the same thing the Victorians did and melding Jack the Ripper and Spring-Heeled Jack into one entity. I am awed by the whole idea. I think it's beyond brilliant. LEAD ON, SHOW. I WILL FOLLOW YOU WHEREVER YOU GO.
Keep doing that Victory Dance! You've earned it. :D

Date: 2011-10-09 02:21 am (UTC)I may have already started the Angry Birds fic. The main problem is that I don't actually know what Angry Birds is like, since everything I know about it comes from Castle.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

So...yay!

Date: 2011-10-09 04:44 am (UTC)Of course, as soon as I finish the last couple of bits of the super-seekrit project, I'll finally be able to get back to reading fic, including one that apparently you wrote and hit the nail on the head with?
