There are two books called "Starcrossed" out in the last twelve months. This is the one that's not about Helen of Troy. ;)

Instead, "Starcrossed" is about a thief-girl with a complicated past who ends up over her head in an intrigue to overthrow the magic-quashing, religiously intolerant government.

I was really impressed at how much faith played a part in this novel. Basically, the world has seven gods, one for each moon, but the followers of Celyst have sort of taken over and repressed everything else. This means, amongst other things, that magic, the gift of Sar, is illegal.

I really liked the themes of friendship, but as always the fight for religious freedom is my favourite. And it doesn't hurt that no one married the prince. ;)

(I did really like the prince, actually. But I'm sticking to type.)

Even though Celyn was being used by a jerk in the book, she fought back in clever and creative ways, and when push came to shove, she ended up telling the truth. I never got the feeling that the story was being forced.

The other thing I really liked is that even though the book ended with a set up for a sequel, the book still had a good ending (by which I mean it didn't leave me hanging!). I'm excited for the next one!

My only real complaint is that there wasn't a map.

So 8/10 for a great cast, creative magic, well constructed story lines, and politics.

I loved this book and am excited for the sequel, LIAR'S MOON. However, I've just learned that SUNWISE (the proposed third book) will not be published due to low sales on STARCROSSED, and that makes me so sad.

(Hee, ICON!)

I am also excited for "Liar's Moon", however that really bites about "Sunwise"!
