Ficlet: Release the...Bears
Jun. 22nd, 2011 10:39 pmComment!fic as written for
penknife earlier, featuring Kate, Declan, half a dozen Norwegian accountants and some bears.
(No spoilers)
Kate's pretty sure she does actually have an office somewhere, Will had mentioned something about an extension and Henry complains from time to time that her voicemail is overflowing and wreaking havoc with some system or other even though she can't imagine who calls her and what they say when they do.
For the most part, Kate conducts her business on her feet, and she very much prefers it that way.
But Will's gone to a conference, and Magnus is in Malayasia chasing some kind of ferret thing, and it's comicon again, and there's something else up with the budget in Norway that Kate is almost sure is just an excuse to make overseas phone calls at odd hours and if she has to talk to one more accountant, she's not sure what she'll do.
After the second day when she's done as much target practice as she can deal with and raided the kitchen for what's left of the redvines, she calls Declan on a whim. She forgets that he's eight hours ahead until the phone starts ringing, but he answers it quickly enough.
"MacRae," he says, quite formally, because Kate is calling from the phone in Helen's office so the call display is misleading.
"It's just me," she says. She realizes that she actually has no reason to call at all, and no idea what to say.
"Bored already, are you?" he asks.
"You could say that."
"Norway again?"
She says something entirely unladylike.
"You know," he says, quite reasonably, "there's no reason you actually have to pick up the phone when they call. You could just say you were doing something else."
"Like what?" Kate says. "All I've got is a bunch of cartesian bears in the basement, and ever since Will gave them the chess sets, they haven't been causing problems."
"You could always open the door and see what happens."
"Don't tempt me."
"Where would be the fun in that?"
The phone rings, the second line. It's Norway.
"I'm getting another call," she says. "I have to go release some bears."
"Cheers," says Declan and hangs up the phone.
Kate looks around Helen's office, the phone ringing at full volume now that she's ended her other call. Yes, it was definitely time for bears.

ALSO! I totally enabled
oparu to write fic! The conversation went something like this:
O: I think James needs babies.
K: YES! LOTS AND LOTS OF BABIES!
O: Okay, how about "Five Times James Watson Was A Midwife (And One Time He Wasn't)"?
K: *glee explosion all over the internet*
O: So...that's a yes then?
K: CAN I HAVE A MERMAID, PLEASE?
Five Nights James Watson Was A Midwife
There's totally a mermaid.

Date: 2011-06-23 05:06 pm (UTC)2. GOD, if there are cameras that link London and Old City, do you have ANY IDEA how much "teleconferencing" there would be? If you know what I mean? And I think you do. :)

Magnus rifled under her coat as her iPad continued to beep. Old City's internal cameras had been activated and that could only mean one thing...trouble.
She found it, brought up the screen showing her what Kate was up to. She hoped that the bears hadn't somehow gotten out.
She blinked and reached for her phone. "What the bloddy hell?" she mumbled as she dialed the numbers and put the phone to her ear.
"Sancutary, Kate here." Was her voice slightly breathless? It should be after what Magnus had witnessed.
"Kate,if you are going to do that please do it on your own time." Magnus hung up the phone. She'd talk to Kate later on the proper use of the Sanctuary's equipment.
Magnus sighed. Well, at least someone other than Will was getting laid.
