tl;dr, Remix
May. 9th, 2011 08:59 amSo the Remix happened.
I have thoughts.
This was not my first remix, but it was my first non-fandom specific one. Of course, I only signed up for one fandom (though I ended up writing for two and receiving a third), but I knew there was a small chance that I'd get paired up with someone who might choose to remix something besides Sanctuary.
I was reasonably sure that I was going to get
shadadukal from the time she told that she was only entering for Sanctuary too. I did my research. At the time, she was writing "Practical Cats", and I had read enough snippets to know that this was the fic of hers I wanted to remix. For the next two months, we talked about cats a lot, even co-writing a second fic in the !verse (Cat's Paw), and it JUST KILLED ME to not talk about Practical Cats (though I did manage to get her to tell me exactly which scenes she wanted written the most).
Anyway, about halfway through writing, I realized that there was no good way to conceal myself in this fic. There were only nine Sanctuary offers, so it was kind of inevitable that I would be recognized. At that point, I went back through and added in all the sentences I'd cut as being "too me" (including Kate's line about cuneiform).
When the stories went live, I reviewed all of them but mine, and then wrote three more in Remix Madness. And then people wrote ME fic for Remix Madness, which was a HUGE and awesome surprise, because I had signed up with less than 24 hours to go. And I got remixed by a random stranger. Who, uh, spelled my name wrong, so I only found the fic by chance while I was skimming the main page, and I can't make the links. But thank you,
sroni. I was surprised and thrilled.
I made one truly hilarious typo while I was writing and it nearly killed me not to tell anyone about it. Because one of the times I'd tried to type "dog", I'd typed "god", and since the spell checker doesn't catch things like that, it made it fairly far along in the draft (including through both betas!). And I couldn't say anything because, along with "cat", "dog" was one of only a few words that would make it REALLY CLEAR a) what I was remixing, b) who I was remixing and c) who I was.
For Madness, I basically scrolled through the offers and wrote for people I knew. Writing Kate and John for
tielan and
penknife was fun, but I adored playing with Methos while remixing for
lferion. Also, he lit stuff on fire. ;) And I wrote the whole thing confusing Amanda with Alexa, and then had to go back and make it slightly less romantic and a bit more utilitarian, but I think it still works.
I had a pile of fun doing this, both the original challenge and the crazy last minute ficlets (writing Methos, FTW!). Sanctuary lends itself quite naturally to remixing, I think, or at least my particular corner of it does, because there is ALWAYS someone watching, and often that person is John and writing John is easy (for me, even when he's a dog). Next year, we just need more people so that I can hide. ;)

Date: 2011-05-09 03:55 pm (UTC)I don't think I fully covered why I picked "An Agony In Eight Fits", but mostly it was the structure, the poem that drew me.
And Nikola's pouting. And there was something else I wanted to say but I forgot.

Date: 2011-05-09 04:24 pm (UTC)1. It was funny and it had the most opportunities to write from other POVs, and
2. I didn't want to write anything particularly shippy or dark. :)
