[livejournal.com profile] shadadukal wrote me fic! And even though she told me about it a couple days ago, I am really good at forgetting that sort of thing, so when AO3 sent me the notification that I had a gift, I was all "Wuh?", and then I realized what it was and DIED OF GLEE because, yes, [livejournal.com profile] shadadukal has written me WAISTCOAT FIC. With Nikola, even. AND IT'S AWESOME.

A Closet Full of Fantasies

OMG, I even adore the title.

Sanctuary comes back tonight! And my parents are going to call me and talk about my weight! Hopefully not in that order, but if they call around airtime, I'm totally claiming that I have a date with one of you to watch on Skype and hanging up on them. Because I love my parents and all, but PAX ROMANA!!!!

(In dad's defence, the first thing he said when he saw me in the webcam was "You have long hair again!", but then it was right into the weight thing ("You didn't answer my email where I asked about your weight."), and then he said mum would call tonight, and that will be EVEN WORSE and...blargh. If I was braver I would send them this or this, but I'm not. Yet. Someday. ARGH.)

Sanctuary. Sanctuary comes back.

WAISTCOAT FIC! (There are other clothes too, I should mention, and then a bit with a bath tub and an NC-17 rating that I totally missed the first time through because: OMG, WAISTCOATS.)

I should also mention that [livejournal.com profile] oboetheres wrote fic as well, in another Sanctuary specific sub-genre that I like, albeit for vastly different reasons than I like Kittens or Clothing. It's called No Rest For The Weary and it's not an Alan Turing fix-it. It is, in fact, the opposite of a fix-it. And, accordingly, my daily dose of helpless rage. But it's also very plausible Nikola, at a time when he was probably pretty open to being broken by bad stuff happening to his friends.

My beta suggested this title. I tweaked it a bit but I instantly knew the idea was perfect! :D I am so happy that you love it so much!

I really missed about 98% of the (non-waistcoat) details on the first read through. Fortunately, I've had a few chances to go back since then...;)

I actually had to go and look up the linked posts to make sure I knew what you were talking about, because I wasn't sure whether your parents thought you were overweight or because they were worried about you not eating enough on your own and getting too thin.

I bet they'd get on Polly Walker's case too, and I think she looks AMAZING. One of the reasons I loved Ranna in 3x13 wasn't really to do with her character at all -- I was just happy to see a non-emaciated middle-aged woman on TV wearing clothes that followed her shape instead of hiding it or squeezing it into some unnatural configuration. When Ranna and Helen were standing together I actually found myself regarding AT a bit critically for how boyish her figure looked by comparison.

My parents think I am overweight.

I love how Sanctuary just keeps coming up with reasons for me to love it...;)

I was going to comment saying AT isn't emaciated or boyish at all, but then I realized my standards are probably different. Even when I had a few more kilos on than I do now, I got called skinny in the UK and the US, which made me boggle because I was on the bigger side of average here, now average, leaning towards slim (I'd have understood being called slim, but skinny brings images of being just skin and bones, which just wasn't and isn't my case). AT doesn't look as if she's starving herself IMO though.

Or in short, I think they both look gorgeous. :)

I think that's kind of what she meant. ;) But yes: it's nice to real people on TV!

I have this bad tendency of reading too much into things...

No worries. :)

I think she was pointing out that AT is a bit more conventional, to play the "Hero" type anyway, but when they put Polly Walker into the same outfit and send the pair of them off with Kate to go save the lava thingy...well most shows wouldn't go there.

(Honestly, I spent most of the scene wondering why their hair wasn't catching on fire...)

Yes, but AT still has a fuller figure than many many actresses in American shows/movies.

And I'll be going off on a slight tangent here. In France, while actresses are on the thinner side, they don't look like they're starving themselves. French women, who according to same stats are the slimmest in the Western world, think the ideal clothing size is 4 (converted to US size) and are on average size 6-8. So there's only a small gap between the "ideal" and the reality. And in the US, what one sees are extremely skinny actresses on TV and in movies (for the most part), 0 is viewed as the ideal size when the average is size 12-14. I can't even... I don't get the US... I just don't. I have no idea how things are in Canada. Except that like the rest of the world you're buried under American movies and TV, who succeed in making women feel bad the world over. I should watch more French movies, I guess, except I rarely find them interesting.

LOL, yes, it probably should have.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it works in Canada too. Annoying, but true. I can barely shop in most "normal" stores, because I am an 18-20, depending on where I am.

That sucks. :( It's the same here. Shops carry sizes for women between 4 and 14. If one is bigger, there are special shops, if one is slimmer, there's the teen section (it's possible there are specialized shops for very thin women, but I really doubt it).

I'd just like to point out that I had never even heard of a size 0 until about 10 years ago, or less, which means that (since I have lived for a few decades before that) it did not used to exist! Just goes to show where society is taking us. :(

Oh, you're right, Amanda Tapping isn't emaciated -- she looks perfectly healthy. She's just a different, leggier build from Polly Walker -- more lithe than curvy on the bottom half. But a lot of times when you see women the age of AT and PW on American network TV, they're sort of bony and papery-skinned and Botoxed, or if they aren't then their weight is either treated as a Big Issue or else a Big Joke, and it was so nice not to see any of that here. That's really what I meant.

So yep, gorgeous middle-aged ladies all around. :)

Oh urgh, the Botox. I can't stand it when you see someone on screen and they have reactions, or try to, but their faces don't move (like Nicole Kidman in "Australia"). If there's no wrinkling on your forehead when you frown for instance, that just doesn't look right. I got a true appreciation of how much your forehead wrinkles last summer. I accidentally banged my head on a shelf and ended up with a cut about a centimeter above my eyebrow. I had bandages for a few days (still have the scar), but in the early days, it hurt every time the skin on my forehead moved, which is very often: when you sneeze, when you frown, when you yawn, when you're surprised, when you're tired and trying to keep you eyes open... And trying to stop it from happening, trying to control my forehead reactions, was impossible. So when there's someone on TV/in movies and their skin has no reaction, it just looks so off because, even if you're not as aware of it as I got to be, you see faces around you react with expressions and the people on TV seems like robots.

My mother-in-law called last night when I was the only one home. I totally blew her off. I haven't talked to her since...um, Christmas? She is recuperating from a broken arm and scheduled for cataract surgery soon. I told her I was trying to finish an assignment for my course (which was true!). I'm trying to find the guilt. Hmm...not finding it! And Sanctuary is a much better excuse! :) Enjoy.
