Action, adventure, morality play, post-apocalyptic recovery story, stupid/blind/ absent but well-meaning grown-ups, clever children.
This book is the fourth in the the Ember series. The first book remains my favourite (heck, even the movie wasn't that bad!), but this was a solidly written novel, and I am glad that the story has ending.
If by "ending" you mean "Holy Scouring of the Shire, Batman!" Because it was totally one of those endings. Where instead of just being finished, there was this whole chapter of "and then and then"s that was actually kind of nice, because I am a sucker for a happy ending (the epilogue at the end of Harry Potter? Yeah, I kind of love it), and because the DuPrau books have never really been about the destination (except, ALIENS? I so don't remember that! This is why series of books should always be read together. But WHATEVER: Happy Ending).
I could have done with more Lina. This should not surprise you. Fortunately, Doon is awesome, and Torren only kind of made me want to punch him this time around.
One of the things I like the most about this book is how useful everyone is. Lina has, for all intents and purposes, a very strange skill set...and yet she's awesome about it. And Doon is not "the genius", he's just...scrappy and unlikely to give up. Even Lizzie has her moments. Because of this, I am far less likely to be annoyed by the clever children/stupid grown-ups aspect of the story because the adults are busy making sure no one starves to death before Lina and Doon do something heroic.
And as always, I like the history (or lack thereof) that this series encompasses. They pretty much live in a vacuum, but every time they find a little hint, they utilize it in a good way.
Basically, these books are so wholesome, they sort of make me crave sugar. ;)
I give it a 7 out of 10. Because City of Ember and the Prophet of Yonwood would both get an 8, and this wasn't as good. And also: ALIENS.
