My friend had a birthday. About a month before, I happened to be flipping through a parenting magazine where I saw an article about a pair of Australian dads who had given their daughter a Marie Antoinette themed party, the main feature being this beautiful cake.
"That," I thought to myself "Is something I can do. Except I would totally cut the head off the doll."
My friend's boyfriend was in agreement, so we embarked on this epic quest of cake bakery. Unfortunately, the camera died and there are no "in process" shots (which is too bad, because there would have been a PRICELESS one we realized that we had to ice the boobs), but you'll get the idea.

Here is the finished product. I was quite pleased with how it turned out.

This is a detailed look at the front of the skirt, white icing for lace and gold balls for accent.

The back of the skirt. Those balls were SUCH a pain! But they look good.

The front of the bodice.

The back of the bodice.

Johnny-M is almost as good at inventing cover stories as he is at maintaining them.

Let them eat cake!

And this is a detail of the head. The head is really the most amazing part because a) I made the hat and b) I did the hairstyle.
The hat was easy: I just painted melty chocolate on a leaf. Unfortunately, I only had white, and it got a bit spotty, so I tried to paint it and it didn't work out like I was hoping. Next time I would use blue chocolate.
The hairstyle was GENIUS, if I do say so myself. The doll spike I used was one of those cheap non-Barbie models that only has a ring of hair around her head, instead of an even spread. I combed all the hair out to expose the bald spot, glued a large marshmallow to the top of her head, and pull the hair up around it. Then I rolled her head around in a bag of icing sugar for a while. A blonde doll would have been better, but they didn't have one.
There you have it!

Date: 2009-06-29 11:36 pm (UTC)I'm single, live alone, and love cake, but there is never anyone to celebrate anything with me. (I'm a hopeless recluse, I think.) :-( I'll have to splurge and make my own birthday cake! Or perhaps cupcakes... a little less ambitious, but hopefully still tasty. My birthday is in August. Maybe I'll have mastered cupcakes from a box mix with canned frosting by then!
You are positively inspiring!!!

Date: 2009-06-30 04:50 am (UTC)My mom made me a Barbie cake once with sort of the same idea, but Marie Antoinette totally takes the, um... you know, cake. :P
The hat and hair are genius, btw. Seriously cool. :D
