My Recipe for Butter cake:

125g of butter, room temperature.
Beat together with 1/4 cup of caster sugar.
Add 1 tsp of vanilla essence.
Add two eggs and beat together.

Alternate two cups flour and one cup milk. Stir until combined.

(although there is an element here of feel - reduce flour/increase milk dependent on consistancy).

This works for cupcakes too ;)
