Elisabeth Sladen, Sarah Jane Smith has died of cancer.
I've been thinking about what to say. I've only really seen her in New Who (so, three episodes), and a bit of the Sarah Jane Adventures. But I loved her, oh, how I loved her. She's pretty much the entire reason why I think to myself on occasion "I should go back and watch Old!Who."
When a "real" person dies, you're sad because you knew them and now they're gone from your life. When a famous person dies, you're sad as a group, because she brought you all together, in one way or another. I don't really know much about Elisabeth Sladen. But I love Sarah Jane Smith.
Sarah Jane Smith managed to make a lasting first impression on me in an episode that also featured Anthony Stewart Head and talking robot dog.
Sarah Jane Smith helped me figure out how I felt about Rose.
Sarah Jane Smith cried when she heard the Daleks coming and, so help me, I thought it was The End.
One of my first impressions of Helen Magnus was "She reminds me of Sarah Jane Smith." And we all know how I feel about Helen Magnus.
She saved the world(s). A lot.

Date: 2011-04-19 11:17 pm (UTC)I've got to admit, when I found out I was very surprised. I wasn't a fan of The SJS Adventures (not really but I have watched a few episodes of it) but I adored her in DW. In the old ones she was there when Tom Baker came on the scene and she was an excellent companion.
Elisabeth Sladen was an excellent actress, and in todays world they are quite honestly few-and-far between - sure you can have a good actress/actor, and a satisfactory one but a truly great actress/actor like Sladen can unite entire generations in sorrow and grief. She's one of the longest running, active (at least in relation to tv) companions of the Doctor and so she's been watched and known by over three generations; amazing.
She was a stunning lady and I feel for her family.

I think that was one of her best ever episodes, she had a real in-depth character to play (since the previous DW episodes with SJS were less... flexible) and I think it shows in her acting. Sublime is a word I'd use to describe it.
There's not much you can say about her in terms of an actress because there aren't enough words in the dictionary to describe her brilliance. A new word should be created that is the very defintion of Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) and is should go something like; Sarah Jane Smith: Friend through time and ally to the impossible.

Date: 2011-04-20 01:38 am (UTC)I remember her from her original run with Doctor #3 and #4 and I adored her even then. She will be greatly missed.
*Hmm... I wonder if the show will actually make some mention and/or tribute to her in some way.
And I like your comparison of her with Helen Magnus. :)
