(Okay, so I've also read the Visual Dictionary, which I really recommend as it was HILARIOUS, but I am only counting novels and comic book volumes.)
The Force Awakens novel was good. There were excellent "behind the scenes" scenes, and also a lot of things that I totally understand why they were cut.
(The example that comes to mind most readily is that Poe tries to talk Lor Etc. into leaving with him, or letting Poe fight, and it's a whole conversation which, in the movie, the actors totally manage to have with their eyes.)
It's entirely worth it for Chewie and Poe, really (AND LEIA, OMG), though the added Rey stuff is also cool, and I am alway here for more Rey.
