New Vid: Poker Face (BSG)
Here we are again with another vid I didn't plan to make. I seem to be starting a trend. Or I can't get the Atlantis clips to work, you pick.
ANYWAY, I heard this cover of Poker Face on Wednesday, and by Thursday night, the vid was already starting to take shape in my mind. In the beginning, it was more about the relationships of the women with one another, but it ended up being about their relationships with me. And how they all became the ship.
(Seriously, if you'd told me that you could turn "Poker Face" into a touching duet about a girl and her mother using only a piano and the power of Broadway, I wouldn't have believed you. But here we are!)
So this vid is about people who didn't have to love, who probably shouldn't have loved, who loved.
I think my favourite part that I did on purpose is the bit where Kara stretches the ball into the pyramid, and my favourite part that just happened is Laura climbing down the stairs in time with the music. The whole Laura bit is kind of awesome, if I do say so myself. ;)
(I have NO IDEA what's up with that first clip of Anders! I swear it doesn't do that in the non-streaming version. Which makes it much cooler!)
This vid was a lot more literal at the beginning, but when I got to the bit with Sharon, I just kind of...lost the will to do it. I didn't want it to be super-violent, which is why Sharon doesn't get any clips while she's in prison, Six doesn't get any clips while she's insane, Tory doesn't get any clips in the airlock, and Racetrack is my closer.
Picking clips for Athena was tough. I kept being all "Hey that's perfect" and then "Shit, that's Boomer." On the bright side, by the time I reached the Six section, I knew better. I'm a little surprised that I gave some of Six's time to Tory, but I think I like it anyway.

Once again, critical reviews are welcomed. I think I did quite a bit better this time (if only because I fixed the music), but I appreciated any advice and recommendations. If nothing else, I got better at cheating with this vid, which helps cover up my mistakes. ;)

Overall, way cool! I love this version of Poker Face and you've made the video work well with it. Now, for a few specific comments and ideas....
00.08 - Very abrupt clip change that looks off because the scene started in a panoramic, rotating style and it looks like something is missing (which it is). Perhaps a very brief overlay transition would have smoothed that over. I haven't seen you use many transition - you should try them because they add creativity and cover potential issues that tend to distract the watcher.
00.29 - The word "one" drawn out - the ship swooping out into a wide arc is perfect!!!
00.34 - I stink at remembering character's names, but I thought it was cool that he set his gun's site on Kara. Then you followed that with the game (00:40-00:58), which fit the lyrics perfectly.
00:58-01:30 - The Laura section is amazing! She is the embodiment of the "poker face" in public. Loved it!
01:31-02:17 - The Sharon/Athena/Boomer (I can't tell them apart) section was well done, although I was slightly uncomfortable with 01:53 when she picked up the baby to the lyrics "If it isn't rough, it isn't fun." But, I'm not exactly an authority on BSG, so there may be some meaning I'm missing. ;-) I especially liked 2:00 (when she takes the oath) and the clips that follow.
02:18-02:42 - Six is perfect for "She's got to love nobody."
02:43-03:07 - I can't remember that character's name either, but I remember her "shifting with the wind" in her allegiances, so well done! You captured that with your clips and the lyrics.
03:08-03:20 - "I'm marvelous!" Indeed!!! Perfect clips!
The ending - I liked the fleet moving off to "She's got to love nobody." It seemed to me that there were tiny subplots throughout the show and your video, but ultimately it was about the fleet and a singular purpose - surviving, moving on to a better place.
Overall, well done! One little blip amongst loads of satisfying!!

AND HEE, because the bit with 0.29 happened because I was aiming for the explosion on "hooked". Funny how that stuff works out, eh?
0.34 is one of my favs! If it wasn't for Laura's awesomeness, this would be my favourite part.
Oh, Athena! I was very careful to not include any clips of Boomer (you can see her back in the scene with Hera). This section was the hardest, because I could have gone really dark with the "if it ain't rough it isn't fun". Instead, I chose to go with Athena and Helo's rescue of Hera (which involved Helo shooting Athena so she'd wake up on the Baseship with Hera, and then Six killed Boomer and they all escaped together).
SIX IS SO GREAT! And it was really hard to get the violence out of her clips. I still went with the baby killing scene, though, because it was the moment I realized that she might just be the most amazing character ever created.
OH, RACETRACK! Somewhere in my head, they all became the ship...

I think you used slightly faster cuts and tried to incorporate a bit more of a story/work with the lyrics than you did in your Leverage vid, which was nice to see.
If I had any critical thoughts, I'd probably suggest paying attention to the lengths of various clips? If you have a very short clip followed by a much longer one, that is quite noticeable, atmospherically, so for instance, around 2:50ish in your Tory section, you have a very, very quick clip of Leoben on the basestar before cutting back to Tory's shot and I kind of thought that felt a bit out of place with the pace of the rest of that section - like, that short clip should have been longer, or not there, since it didn't fit the "rhythm" of the section?
Also I think the jump cut with Kara right at the start - since jump cuts aren't a motif you use throughout, would maybe have been a bit smoother if you'd cut to a different shot from that scene before back to her, or if you'd used more jump cuts throughout?
These are things I imagine you will find your own "feel" for with time.
Also, the RATS at 1:35! They showed up right as my pet rat climbed up on my shoulder and tried to eat my headphones... (aaaand, there she goes again...)

Er...yes. That was awkward. There was a bit more at the front of the clip, I thought, but then when I saw the whole thing at once, it wasn't there. And it was during the "rewatch the whole thing every damn time" segment of my editing, so it got a little overlooked.
And yes, Kara's jump cut is me still learning how to vid. It needs work. Clip selection/management is definitely on my list for my next vid. Which could, apparently, happen at ANY TIME. ;)
