Book #14: Wizard's First Rule, Terry Brooks

Epic fantasy of Epic, violence, rape, people existing below the waist (sort of), forbidden love, TV show potential.

I kind of hated this book. With 200 pages to go (so 500 pages in), I thought to myself, "What else could possibly happen", and then I thought "Oh frak, Denna", and then I skipped a lot because, dude, I don't want to read that sort of thing for fun. However, I totally got to the end and thought (after I finished celebrating for reasons I'll explain in the spoiler cut) "Hey! I should get book two!" for about a nanosecond before I remembered that I would rather shoot myself in the head.

I am kind of surprised that people were upset about The Mud People getting cut out of the show. Because they were DEAD BORING.

I loved Rachel. To bits. She was pretty much all that kept me going. And I loved that Giller got to actually be a character instead of just a walking stereotype. I sort of found him to be the most compelling, though that might be because I spent the first little while expecting him to turn on Rachel because I thought he was evil.

Richard and Khalan and Zedd, on the other hand? *tears out hair* They were so...annoying. And mopey. And...stuff. I wonder if I would have been more interested in their story if I hadn't know about the Confessor thing. Because she took FOR FREAKING EVER to get around to it, and I was just...bored. Also, I am pretty sure Con Dar now makes less sense, and I am not sure how that's possible. I liked Giller as much as I did because Khalan had to eat so much crow about being pissed off at him. He basically saved all their asses, and I like that.

I also found Darken Rahl much less compelling. Even when I imagined him saying his lines in Craig Parker's voice.

I totally did a victory dance post "I am [your] father", because I KNEW IT and also because it makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE.

Now I'm gonna have to watch the show again...

I didn't write anything today. Well, I wrote by hand, but I didn't type anything up, so I am not counting it. And I didn't even do very much of that. I just...got home from work and fizzled out entirely. Tomorrow I'll go to a coffee shop after work. That should set me up to finish CHAOS.
