Book #25: The Stepsister Scheme, by Jim C. Hines

Girls Who Rock, fairy tell retelling, magic, fairies of the unpleasant variety, magic, true love, etc.

Lest you all start thinking I only read books about girls that are written for teenagers, I decided to read and post about this one!

Of course, that's not exactly true. ;) As a matter of fact, these books were recommended by [livejournal.com profile] cereta. I think the third one just came out. And anything that features Red Riding Hood as an assassin is FINE WITH ME.

I didn't love this book, but I liked it well enough to read it in about a day. I have a very thin tolerance for satire (mostly in that I don't find it funny, but also that I find it goes out of the way to offend people, and I am not sure why people find that funny), and this book was riiiiight on the edge of it.

STILL! The princesses were AMAZING and the story was interesting if a touch frenetic and overcomplicated. Clearly reading YA has spoiled me. I expect stories to make sense. ;)

Also, there as no map. And we all know how I feel about maps. ;)

7.5 out of 10. But I feel weird judging the book at all, because the criteria I am judging it on are different from my usual. In any case, we'll see how I fare with the rest of the series!
