1. When she is eight and her governess tells her that the creature in her dream is impossible, Helen believes her, but only until the next day when she hears it roaring in the basement.
2. At first, Ashley is unsure, hands too small to really cover the grip and reach the trigger at the same time, but her mother's hands are secure around hers, and together they fire properly and find the centre of the target.
3. Helen holds the vial of blood in her hands, dark red clashing horribly with her pale blue gown, and she feels the siren call of science pulling her towards it.
4. From the parapet, she can see the whole house at the same time, and even when it's cold, she always feels at home.
5. For decades now, Helen hasn't really marked the years, but when she looks up at the baby James is holding out to her, she decides it's probably time to start keeping track again.
