Last night, I started re-reading [livejournal.com profile] melyanna's semi-epic Season 8/Season 1 SG-1/Stargate Atlantis crossover THE CROSSROADS OF ESHU, wherein Sam gets transported to an Alternate Universe where Elizabeth is still in charge of the SGC and...well, much awesomeness transpires. This wasn't the first AU I ever read, but it's a really good one. Lots of consideration went into picking the divergence point, and then structuring the world and the reasons for it. And then the ending is just excellent. :)

Plus, THERE IS A SHINY TRAILER, which will always have a special place in my heart, because that is how I met [livejournal.com profile] faith_king:

(Jack and John have a conversation in an elevator that NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED. I love it.)

(Also, [livejournal.com profile] melyanna has both a Mitchell AND a Caldwell in this story...neither of whom had been introduced to the audience when she wrote it.)

Anyway, I'm now in full out Atlantis-mode. I gave some thought to re-reading [livejournal.com profile] stargate_ren, so I read up to the Solstice story, and then scrolled down the page to see how many more were left and, WOW, THERE WERE A LOT. But I guess it's been half a decade. ;)

FANDOM, I LOVE YOU. That's basically what it comes down to. As usual. :)

I realized that I never actually posted the rec for that Game of Thrones vid I talked about when I explained why I sat down and watched the show over the weekend. So here's the rec. The song is "Thistle And Weeds" which I had never heard, by Mumford and Sons, which I'd only heard of because of the Lion song. Anyway, the first 20 seconds of the vid was enough to make me watch the show. It's really that good. The vid focuses primarily on Dany and her various relationships. It pulls no punches. Literally. But the song encompasses Dany's determination and the path she takes to find her power, which was something I adored in the series itself. I also really, really liked the editing (which I won't spoil for you), and the song is a wonderful kind of understatedly epic that makes me wonder why no one ever pointed me at Mumford and Son's before.

Thistle and Weeds: Fire cannot kill the dragon.

++

In a COMPLETELY different direction, we have the ADORABLE PONDS from Eleventy!Who, in a vid called "You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate", which pretty much tells you everything you need to know. The song and clip choices complement one another perfectly, and the tone of the vid is spot on with the series itself.

You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate: Oh, Ponds.

++

I should probably have mentioned that all of these are from Vividcon, which I did not attend but looked forward to because I knew there would be great vids afterward. This next vid was the "intro", and it might just be the day I'm having, but I totally cried. FANDOM, you guys! AND VIDDING! *hugs everyone*

Intro Vid 2011: Welcome all

++

This next vid covers a whopping SEVENTEEN YEARS (some of which overlap, but still) of footage. All Stargate, all the time (and it says something about the Ancients that I agree with...I think!).

High Voltage

++

There is not enough "How To Train Your Dragon" out there. Just sayin'.

AN: Written for the Teyla Thing-a-thon at [livejournal.com profile] teylafen, for [livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe, who wanted “gen or het; if shippy, Teyla/Ronon or Teyla/Lorne, if not shippy, anything with Ronon, Elizabeth, John, Rodney, Lorne, Keller, Carson, Zelenka, Ford, Grodin, Heightmeyer, Halling...” and “Teyla kicking ass and taking names; sparring, both physically and verbally, with any of the above named characters; a quiet night at home”. Thank goodness I don’t thrive on specifics. ;)

Spoilers: Up to the end of the series, more or less.

Disclaimer: So not mine!

Rating: Teen

Character: Teyla (and kind of a lot of other people…)

Summary: Teyla runs.

AN: One of my favourite things about the new SGA Legacy books is that since we spend time with the Wraith, we also spend time in their mindset, particularly how they think of the Lanteans and their Queens. If Jeannie really does show up, I don't think they quite understand what they're in for...but I might die of excitement waiting to find out!

Spoilers: Takes place after "The Lost", including speculation.

Rating: Teen.

Disclaimer: Stargate Atlantis is not mine. But you should totally read the books.

Characters: Quicksilver, Death, Todd, Jeannie Miller

Summary: The rumours start in the Game Room.

I've posted a couple of times about this already, in varying states of excitement, but now that I'm finished I will add three more things:

Spoilers! )

8.5/10 for knocking stuff down, jokes about icebergs, Radek being awesome, Jennifer Keller: henchperson extraordinaire, Carson on drugs, pigeons, giant squids and so on.

And now, we wait...

(I DON'T WANT TO WAIT!)

You know, this feeling I have right now is probably why I stopped reading tie-ins. I can't handle the pressure of waiting. And hey, the website tells me there are six books, not three, but doesn't list a date for the third one yet. *meeps*
grav_ity: (books 2011)
I haven't read a tie-in in FOREVER. Such nostalgia! I used to order them into my small town library six or eight at a time, and then read them in an hour at the park. Mostly Voyager, TNG and Deep Space Nine (I looked it up, and discovered that I'd actually read Melissa Scott's DS9 book), and my very favourites, Peter David's Excalibur books. I've read a few SG-1 tie-ins, but this was my first for Stargate Atlantis.

I have, as I've said before, a weird relationship with Stargate Atlantis. It was shaped almost entirely in season one and changed very little in the following seasons. The writers I surrounded myself with in fandom focused largely on Elizabeth, city politics, and Pegasus Galaxy politics, instead of the harder military sci-fi and Earth politics aspects of the show. So reading "Homecoming", set in what's basically Season Six, was a bit of a departure for me.

That said, I really enjoyed it. And I think the thing I enjoyed the most was how many supporting characters got to show up (because you don't have to pay the actors, obviously, so you can do whatever you want). And I'm not just talking Radek and Banks. I'm talking people we haven't seen hide or hair of since season two. ;)

Spoilers! )

8/10 for nostalgia, the part where the City was awesome, the jokes about tava beans, that time John was happy about using the Twain line, the part where the expedition anthropologists classify new Pegasus cultures by how far from the Gate they choose to settle, every scene with Radek, and Jennifer and Rodney's as yet unnamed cat, about whom I may or may not already be writing fanfic. :)

Just so you all know, I considered not even editing this in order to stay within the theme. Fortunately cooler heads prevailed.

AN: Hello! It’s October 20, and this story is due in two days. My brain is totally fried, I haven’t had a hot meal since Monday, and I am not sure when/if I’ll ever get out of Northern Alberta once work sends me there. This might be a bit subpar. But still: SPARKY! So it’s a win.

Spoilers: Um...I don’t know. I have no idea what this story is going to be about. I’ll come back to this later.

Rating: We’ll assume PG. I am not very good at sex scenes, and I don’t think sitting in this Starbucks waiting for the internet company to call me is going to be, you know, inspiring.

Summary: Things happen, or not, and sometimes it’s totally not at all like Vancouver. It rains a lot in Vancouver, for one. But the trees are a constant.

I'll have you know that I have partial paragraphs written out titled things like "Sparks Fly Upwards (or, The Vancouver Paradox)", and "Sink or Swim (or, 10,000 Ways To Die In Alberta)". Of those, the latter might get written, but it's going to be Kate and Laura for a lot, so it's not really appropriate here.

AN:I had great plans to write Eid fic for [livejournal.com profile] irony_rocks again, but it didn't work out. Like, at all.

Instead I found a snippet I wrote back in January from a prompt that [livejournal.com profile] lyssie gave me which has nothing to do with anything, except for the Penguins.

Spoilers: None, really.

Disclaimer: Seriously, at this point is it even a question?

Summary: At the time, Rodney had thought that telepathic non-whales would be the worst.

OMG, YOU GUYS!

[livejournal.com profile] oparu Is fairly new to my f-list, but she's certainly made an impression on me. Her newest SGA story? MADE OF BRILLIANCE AND WIN.

The basic idea is an Au wherein Elizabeth Weir is an actress who plays Dr. Victoria Higginson on the TV show Pegasus X-Treme (which is a spin-off of the show Wormhole X-treme). On the day when they're filming her character's death scene, she and her co-stars step through a brand new Stargate prop...and into the adventure of their lives.

John and Rodney just KILL me, Teyla is a mastermind, and the jokes about TV are so funny that I totally made a spectacle of myself at Starbucks.

Includes lines like this:

"Wraith are the basis for the fictional creatures you call Shades," Teyla clarified for them. "Only they are more frightful and cruel than we were able to depict on the show."

"Well, we were on primetime," Rodney mused, not quite getting it.

"Oh I know, think how terrible they would have been if we were on HBO?" Carson interjected.

And a line about how Lorne's team always gets it in one take that I can't recall exactly but might have done permanent damage to my spleen.

AND THE CITY ITSELF! OMG, just go READ IT.

I cannot recommend this fic enough!
